Burloak Canoe Club members Adam van Koeverden, Mark Oldershaw and Mallorie Nicholson all struck gold at the championships, which are a qualifying event for next years Pan Am Games. Van Koeverden finished first in the five-kilometre kayak singles race despite struggling to adjust to the high altitude of Mexico City. Lessons racing @ Mexico City altitude, the three-time Olympic medallist tweeted before the race. 1)They have way less oxygen here 2) I need that stuff to make the boat go fast 3) Cough, cough 4) Cough. Oldershaw, who has won four World Cup medals in his career, won the 5K canoe singles event. Nicholson won the senior womens canoe pairs 200-metre and 500m races with teammate Jenna Marks of Darmouth, N.S. Nicholson also won silver in the canoeing sin- gles 200m and 500m. MICHELLE SIU / OAKVILLE BEAVER Blades snap out of funk with win over Waxers By Jon Kuiperij BEAVER SPORTS EDITOR After a slow start to the season, the Oakville Blades feel like theyre finally on track. The defending Provincial Junior Hockey League champions won two of their three games over the past week, including a 5-2 tri- umph over the league-leading Markham Waxers Thursday to snap a three-game losing streak. That was a real good character builder for us, said Oakville head coach Mark Jooris, whose Blades followed up the victory over Markham with a 3-2 loss to the Georgetown Raiders Friday at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex and then earned a 5-0 win Sunday over the Collingwood Blues, improving their record to 6-4-1. We were desperate. We need to start string- ing some wins together and show we can beat the top teams. Markham was the No. 1 ranked team in Canada and we handed it to them pret- ty good. Right after that, we saw Georgetown, one of the hottest teams in the league. And that was a game we... also should have won. Two of Oakvilles veterans led the way in the win over the Waxers, who had lost just once in 12 games going in. Forward Mark McGowan sparked the Blades offence with three goals and an assist, while goaltender Dan Savelli stopped all 15 shots he faced in the first period and finished the contest with 36 saves. McGowans been real good all year. He has had some bad luck with putting the numbers up, but now its starting to come, said Jooris. Savelli played phenomenally against Markham.
