Television personality Debbie Travis filmed the Oakville commu- nity earlier this year as it came together to help out a person who has done so much for it. Now, that episode of All For One with Debbie Travis will air on the CBC on Sunday, Oct. 31 at 9 p.m. It shows the different flavours of the community across the coun- try and how far people will go to get help and what happens when volunteers come together. Its like modern day barn-raising, Travis said of her show. The premise of the show is that Travis recognizes a hero within a community and presents him or her to the community members. Then, she takes the community members to do something in return for the hero. She said the show is about the hero, the community and then about the renovation that takes place during the show. In the case of the Oakville episode, Travis is recognizing Sera Mansueto, who is a mural painter professionally. When shes not paint- ing murals she devotes her time to the local charity Walls of Hope, which she founded and directs. She started a business and she did quite well, Travis said of Mansueto. She decided to take her skill and gather other peoples skills and create a charity for other single mothers who are struggling. Walls of Hope aims to give fam- ilies, particularly those with chil- dren and who are really work- ing at breaking the cycle of hard- ship a hand up to help get them escape the cycle. Walls of Hope, which formed in 2005, has assisted families with residential renovations and with public building renovations, including the Halton Trauma Centre in Oakville. So in recognizing Mansuetos and the charitys work, Travis gath- ered people from across Oakville for a film shoot in Oakville. And it was those people who then volunteered to do something for Mansueto. The idea is that the catalyst of this show is the huge renovation. But the catch is that Im not doing it. I want to see how much the community will step up to the plate and do this for this one per- son, Travis said. The fun of the show is the drama of the volunteer. The show requires plenty of vol- unteers, all of them from within the community, being guided by Travis, who supplies the materials, the tools and the meals for the volunteers. The show looks for people in the community with certain skills, such as trades skills. Travis said the Oakville episode is particularly funny because of its nude content. Within the show we ask a lot of the guys why they get involved with Walls of Hope. And theres these nice Canadian hunky guys with their tool belts. I said, Whyd you do it,? and they all say the same thing: Actually, its a great way to meet women. Whatever the reason for volun- teering, good work ends up getting done, said Travis, which helps someone who needs it. So in the show, Travis asks the men to pose for a calendar shoot. She first asks them to take off their shirts, which they do, and then things go even farther. I said while youre here, itd be amazing to make loads of money for Sera so why dont we just go for the full monty? she said. The men comply. We ended up shooting a nude, completely stark-naked calendar of all the best and worst bodies of Oakville. Its hilarious. In the shoot the men are hold- ing tools or tool kits in front of their private parts. Afterwards, at a womens gala event, the mens pictures are pro- jected and then the men, dressed, are auctioned for handyman work. The women went crazy, Travis laughed. I have to say the women of Oakville are animals. We raised over $5,000 in under an hour and it all went to (Seras) charity to buy materials. Travis said the show is about recognizing an individuals hard work, but it does it in a fun way. Its a lot of screaming and shouting, but at the end everybody wins. People have had an amazing week. Somebodys got something that they deserve and a message has been given. The Oct. 31 show will be episode four of the show, which is in its first season. All for Sera as Traviss Oakville episode airs ALL FOR ONE: In the Oct. 31 episode of Debbie Travis (right) new show, All For One, it will be Sera Mansueto (left) of Oakville, in the spotlight. A mural painter by trade, Mansueto founded Walls of Hope, which draws on community volunteers and donations to renovate the homes of those who are struggling to raise their families despite hardship.
