Many of the parents would feel more anxiety about their teenaged children hanging out in an iso- lated location than a park in full view of mem- bers of the community. I hope that council puts West Oak Trails Park on its list of locations to consider. If nighttime visitors are a concern, then a little more proactive and persistent policing should change that behaviour. I doubt that it would take very many trespassing fines before peo- ple got the message that it is not a good spot to congregate after dark. As for the daytime noise of the skate- boards, from what Ive seen, the park is the only one in the area (other than Glen Abbey perhaps) with enough space to provide the distance barrier required to avoid major ongoing disturbance. The park is buffered by a woodlot that should provide enough separa- tion and noise dampening in the daytime. Noise, of course, travels farther at night; so, nighttime use should be strongly discour- aged. I wonder if all solutions have been consid- ered. Perhaps the park could be fenced off so that it can be closed at night. How would the cost of such a fence compare to the costs incurred so far by moving the equipment from place to place? Perhaps another, more visible location within the park could be found. Visibility will make it easier to police and discourage loitering. All parks deal with a certain amount of unwanted noise and activity. The skateboard equipment can encourage all kinds of youth- ful activity and becomes an easy target and rallying point for protest. Council needs to make tough decisions that are in the best interest of all Oakville res- idents balancing the needs of all. Then hit the road. All three Oakville beaches have been deemed unsafe for swimming this week due to high levels of bacteria by the Halton Region Health Department. The health department does weekly tests to recreational waters in the region throughout the summer months. The unsafe beaches are Coronation Park West and East as well as Bronte Park Beach.
