(NC)A recent Direct Energy survey asked Canadians to rate the overall energy efficiency fitness of their homes. Forty-two percent described the fitness/efficiency level of their home as 'trim', mean- ing their home is moderately ener- gy efficient, but has room for improvement. On the opposite end, a smaller group rated their homes as 'couch potato' when asked the same question. For trim and couch potato homes alike, Direct Energy has a few tips to boost the energy effi- ciency fitness of homes for the late summer and early fall months. Late Summer Save as much as 10 percent on your cooling bill by setting the programmable thermostat five degrees warmer at night and dur- ing the day when nobody is home. Keep your central air condi- tioner working efficiently by changing your furnace filter. A clean filter means the system does- n't have to work as hard to push cool air throughout the house. Ensure vents are unobstruct- ed so your cooling system can pro- vide even air distribution and close vents in less used rooms so you're not paying to cool empty spaces. Early Fall By lowering the programma- ble thermostat by two degrees overnight and when nobody is home, you could save as much as four per cent on heating costs. Keep heated air where it belongs. If a window air condition- er is staying in place for the winter, be sure to seal it with caulking or tape and cover with an airtight, insulated jacket to keep warm air in and cold air out.
