He replaces outgoing chair Sonny Jelinek. Speaking before a crowd of 500 guests at the Oakville Conference Centre, Brown thanked the mem- bers for their faith in him and com- mended the past chairs, including Jelinek. The chairs have built a strong legacy for our chamber and they need to be thanked for it, he said. He talked about moving the suc- cessful Chamber forward to help strengthen the local business com- munity. He talked about the upcoming municipal, provincial and possibly federal elections and how the Chamber needs to main- tain and strengthen its relation- ships with all levels of government. He also joked before the gather- ing of Oakvilles business leaders. Id like to thank my wife for her support, he said. When I was nominated for chair I asked my wife what she thought. She said, Are you crazy? Do it. Brown is a former town coun- cilor and president of the Glen Abbey Residents Association. Hes had a career in sales, sales manage- ment and as an executive in telecommunications and software. He then switched over to real estate and now provides services across southern Ontario. The outgoing chair of the board also had some advice for Brown. Last year I ended my speech with something that was very important to me, something I was really looking forward to this year, something that my dad talked about at the Chamber of yesterday. That was the opportunity as chair- man of the board to enjoy long, liq- uid lunches, he said. I can tell you that there is no such thing in todays Oakville Chamber as a long, liquid lunch. He said when he was at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce Convention in Victoria, B.C. he was put into a survival suit to learn about the environment and its effect on local fisheries. When I was sitting in that boat I knew I was not at a long, liquid lunch, he added. Despite the lack of long, liquid lunches, he commended the Chamber for its record growth in the past year to now include 1,100 local businesses. He thanked the countless volunteers who help make the Chamber successful and the full time staff members for working beyond their required duties. The night also included the presentation of the Nelson Cusitar Memorial Award, which recognizes a persons contribution to the Oakville business community over an extended period of time. This is the third time the award has been handed out and this year it went to Len Sanci, chair of the Oak-Land Ford Lincoln Sales Ltd. New chair takes helm of Chamber of Commerce Mark Brown
