By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Town council voted unanimously Monday night to fill in some of the holes in its policies regarding where, how and when power generation facilities are allowed in Oakville. The motion, which was brought forward during the Planning and Development Council meeting, called for the passing of amendments to the Towns Official Plan, Zoning Bylaw and North Oakville Zoning Bylaw. These amendments dealt with things like the size, location and type of power generation facility the Town wants to see take root in Oakville and those it does not. One amendment said that cogeneration facilities with a capacity of less than 25-megawatts and other power gen- eration facilities with a capacity of less than five megawatts may be permitted in the Midtown Oakville employment district south of the QEW, the Uptown Core community west of Trafalgar Road, the Palermo Village Centre com- munity and other lands designated employment. The amendment also said these facilities would need to be designed in a way to make them compatible with the surrounding areas existing or proposed land uses. John Ziemba, the owner of Black Forest Pastry Shop, located at 184 Lakeshore Rd., E., unveiled the 2010 Election Cupcake Poll, last week. The cupcake poll gives the patrons of his shop the opportunity to choose cup- cakes bearing the names of Oakvilles four mayoral candidates Rob Burton, Ann Mulvale, Raymond Ray and John McLaughlin. Ziemba said he decided to start the cupcake poll because of the level of apathy present within the community when it comes to municipal elections. My neighbour Dave Gittings is run- ning in the election and we were talking and he mentioned to me that only a third of Oakville residents came out to vote last election, said Ziemba. I thought, Why dont we put election signs on the cupcakes? Maybe it will cre- ate a buzz, bring a little more awareness to the election and it might help get peo- ple out to vote.
