Etobicoke Oakville Why should you be elected mayor? I kept my promises to create a more livable Oakville by controlling growth and its costs and by catching up on infra- structure. I promise to keep moving forward to a future that is sustain- able financially, environ- mentally and socially. A key for financial sustainability is to make developers pay the costs of growth. Developers are challenging our new charges and Official Plan in court. Oakville needs leader- ship that stands up to developers. I have never taken money from developers and never will. My council increased public facilities, tran- sit ridership, road renewal and green space. We increased public safety by improving fire response times and adopting new air quality rules. We improved services like snow and leaf clearing and mowing. We decreased the debt that taxpayers pay by nine per cent. We kept our AAA credit rating the highest possible. We held the average rate of tax increases to 2.67 %. The previous two terms the average tax increase was 3.61% (35% larger than 2.67%). For 2011, we have directed staff to limit the tax increase to three per cent. My focus is to meet new needs for families like a modern hospital while keeping taxes low with new non-tax revenues and new businesses. For more, visit www.VoteBurton.ca. Oakville is at a crossroads. Despite efforts to conceal our true financial position, it has become very clear that in four short years our Towns finances have been severely mismanaged. We have taken on debt a 206 per cent jump in just a year. We have overspent adding 156 jobs to the Towns payroll and spending almost all of our $64 million development charge reserve fund (leaving just $800,000 in the bank when our neighbours in Burlington and Milton have between $30-40 million in sim- ilar reserves). And there is no plan to pay for needed items like our share of the hospital a $200 million commitment. In fact, the only plan, as the incumbent has pointed out repeatedly, is borrowing up to $500 million more. We need solid, proven leadership to avoid a high-growth, high-debt, high-tax future. In my 18 years as your mayor I spent your tax dollars with care. I took on provincial and federal governments of all political stripes to fight for our fair share. I engaged with every part of our community, allowing everyone a say in our Towns future. If elected I will follow this same path of fiscal prudence and openness. Its what Oakville needs now. John McLaughlin Ann Mulvale If you want four more years of higher taxes, higher debt, higher spending, and a hospital funded by borrowing that will cost double the $200-million estimate, then I should not be elected mayor of Oakville I refuse to bankrupt Oakvilles future by acting reck- lessly as in the past. As mayor, I will cut the $310 million spending budget 10 per cent each year by reducing bureaucracy and waste. Six per cent of that spending cut will fund Oakville's initial hospital contribution of $130 million in 2015, $40 million from the recent Blink Communications sale will fund the rest. Alternative energy projects like solar, that don't pollute and do cre- ate technological jobs, will provide $40 million revenue for the hospital and green future Town revenue. Property taxes will be lowered for residents and businesses not raised. The Town debt of $74 million will be cut not raised. Hybrid and electric vehicles will be acquired for the Town and Oakville Transit saving the environment and making transportation fun. Lower business taxes will allow businesses to expand and create jobs in Oakville. That is my future for Oakville a sound future for everyone.
