While driving schools typically teach lessons in-class and apply them during in-car sessions, DriveWise engages students interactively in and out of the classroom. Our driver training incorporates a driving simulator into the classroom aspect of the course, says Oakville DriveWise owner and operator Tim Danter. Our goal is to develop responses and provoke thought about differ- ent situations that drivers can get into. Each and every driver-training program must meet requirements set by the Ministry of Transportation but it was DriveWises deci- sion to use Simulator Driver Training for their course. We want to help our students develop those behavioural habits early, says Danter. The simulator creates all those situations that every driver finds themselves in a one point or another: blown tires, getting rear- ended by another driver, other vehicles run- ning stop signs and traffic lights. New drivers can develop a sort of tunnel vision when learning because theyre taught to keep their eyes on the road but most prob- lems come from the side or behind. Were teaching drivers how to develop sight lines and the habit of looking for those things before they get to it, he says. The recent release of failure-rate norms across Ontario has given Oakville a less-than- stellar reputation for driving students prepar- ing to take their G2 or G license tests. Since the province does not require drivers to com- plete the road tests in the city they live, many drivers travel to other cities where they believe theyll have an easier time passing the test. Danter believes that can set new drivers up for serious consequences. If a driver from Oakville is learning to drive in a city with a lower failure rate, theyre really not preparing themselves for the exter- nal conditions, like traffic and pedestrians, theyll face while driving in Oakville, says Danter. Not to mention the fact that most col- lisions occur within five kilometers of home. The G-license exit test is much more demanding, making the idea of completing it in a small town much more appealing, but, says Danter, it should really be done where the driver resides. It may take six attempts to get it, but at least youre learning to drive for the area you travel in most, he says. Driving students develop a comfort zone for the areas theyre learning to drive in, and when theyre taken out of that comfort zone of a small town, thats when collisions happen. Regardless of what the Toronto Star arti- cle indicates, Danter supports taking the test where drivers reside and applauds Drive Test centres for doing the necessary checks and balances when it comes to examiners. Ive been doing road tests since 1987 and in that time, Ive seen the good, the bad and the ugly, he says. I think the Drive Test centres are doing a great job and I hope they continue to evolve the quality of the testing procedure.
