But newcomers to Oakville face many obsta- cles in their settlement into our community, including language and cultural barriers, employment discrimina- tion, lack of access to affordable housing and transportation, and a lack of information relat- ed to their rights, health- care, and education. Newcomers arrive with a variety of skills and credentials, and they should have the opportu- nity to work and partici- pate fully in our society. According to 2001 cen- sus data, the majority of newcomers to Canada do not work in the same occu- pational field as they did before coming to Canada. In 2006, almost 30 per cent of recent immigrants to Oakville lived below the poverty line. United Way of Oakville works to create a healthy, caring, and inclusive community. We fund agencies that support and assist newcomers, such as the Halton Multicultural Council (HMC), which facilitates the settlement and integration of immi- grants and refugees into our community. The Halton Multicultural Council was founded in 1979 and has four offices in Halton, two of which are located in Oakville. One office is on Speers Road and the other is on Dundas Street East. HMC is a community agency that works to enable every person, regardless of race or eth- nic origin, to participate as full and active mem- bers of our community by fostering mutual respect and understand- ing of one another. The HMC offers settle- ment services, employment and language training, interpretation and translation services, and con- versation circles.
