Trinity also did a decent job against Notre Dames power running game, particularly in the first half. The Irish finished the contest with 208 yards rushing on 37 attempts, but many of those yards came in the final min- utes against a fatigued Titans defence. But Trinity had no answer for the surpris- ingly effective Notre Dame passing game surprising because it was direct- ed by Chris Pezzetta, the Irish star running back that ran for 100 yards and two touchdowns in last years Halton final. Pezzetta displayed remark- able touch on deep throws to Max Mezzabotta, connecting with his receiver on a 42-yard touchdown strike on the fourth play from scrimmage and then setting up another touchdown with a 40- yard bomb. Pezzetta and Mezzabotta also hooked up for a 13-yard strike late in the first half, giv- ing the Irish a 22-9 lead going into intermis- sion. You cant stop everything when youre facing a team with a ton of weapons, Moscato said. We wanted to play disciplined pass coverage and stop the run. They burnt us with the pass early. Nguyen capitalized on one of Pezzettas few mistakes on the afternoon, intercepting a pass in the third quarter, but was impressed with how well Pezzetta threw the ball. The only thing that really killed us was the long balls over the top, he said. Pezzetta only started playing quarterback for the Irish a few games ago as Notre Dame looked to improve its downfield passing attack. He threw one pass last year, and it was an interception, said Notre Dame coach Chad Wozney. Hes never had quarterback train- ing. Hes just a good athlete who can throw. He puts you in a position where he can run or pass, and that can really hurt other teams. Pezzetta added 86 yards on the ground as well. Hes the best football player in Halton, Moscato said. He can do anything. I bet you he can punt 40 yards as well. Trinitys other points in the loss came on a conceded safety in the second quarter. The Titans threatened several times in the second half as quarter- back Fabian DeSantis connected with Brandon Clark on a pair of deep throws, but Notre Dame forced a fumble inside its 20- yard line in the third quarter and picked off a pair of DeSantis throws in the final three minutes. Trinity was also hurt by the absence of running back Ashton Rochester, who broke his leg late in the Titans semifinal win over the M.M. Robinson Rams last week. I thought we fought hard, said Moscato. We just couldnt make enough plays. Notre Dame, the defending Golden Horseshoe Bowl champions, will play Bramptons St. Marguerite dYouville Panthers Friday at Ron Joyce Stadium in the Golden Horseshoe Bowl semifinals. Holy Trinity coach Joe Moscato Blades edge Red Wings in Hamilton Tyler Karius scored twice to lead the Oakville Blades to a 4-3 win over the Hamilton Red Wings Monday in Hamilton. Josh Ranalli and Stefan Thompson also tallied and Daniel Savelli made 23 saves in goal for the Blades, who were playing their third game in four days. Oakville blanked the Collingwood Blackhawks Friday at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex, then dropped a 6-2 decision to the Burlington Cougars Saturday in Burlington. Karius also held the hot hand in the rout of Collingwood, recording a hat trick. Kyle Lysaght added a pair and Matt Braun contributed a single for Oakville, which outshot the Blackhawks 42-14 on the night. Eric Faion posted the shutout in net. Against the Cougars, Stephen Hickey opened the scoring and Brandon Denham added a third-period marker for Oakville. Burlington scored five unanswered goals after Hickeys first-period tally. The Blades, who have won four of their last five games, are now 13-9-1 on the sea- son, good for fourth in the Ontario Junior Hockey Leagues West Division. Oakville will open a home-and-home series with the Brampton Capitals tomor- row (Thursday) when it travels to Brampton. The Capitals visit Sixteen Mile Sports Complex Friday, a 7:30 p.m. start. Oakville will play three games in three days, starting with an 8:30 p.m. home game Friday against the Aurora Panthers at Joshuas Creek Arenas. Oakville will also be home to the Bluewater Hawks Saturday afternoon, a 4:30 start, and then visit the Durham West Lightning Sunday in Ajax. The Hornets are 2-9-2 on the campaign, but they have earned points in five of their last eight contests. Intermediate Hornets back in action Friday
