It could also help police locate missing per- sons with autism and Downs Syndrome. Walter Saunders, whose wife Clementina began suffering from Alzheimers and dementia after incurring a head injury in a 2003 car acci- dent, is urging Halton residents to back ser- vices grant application with the insurance company Aviva. The bid is one of many applications for financial assistance from the Aviva Community Fund, which members of the public can vote on via the web. The 30 top vote-getters will gain a slice of the $1 million up for grabs. When she goes missing it is truly heart- wrenching, said the 82-year-old. I think this technology is worthwhile. It could end up sav- ing my wifes life. During the last incident, Saunders said, Clementina was missing almost 18 hours before police found her walking along the shoulder of Hwy. 401, about 43 km from her home. It was scary beyond belief and sad, said Saunders. She went missing at 9 a.m. and was found 3 a.m. the next day. I am with her 24 hours a day, seven days a week, but its difficult. The last time she went missing, I was in the house. I was attending to something else when all of a sudden my neigh- bour told me she took off. The police did a wonderful job along with all the volunteers, but if she had this device the whole situation may have been avoided. By using a tracking device, she could have been located within 30 minutes, police said. Constable Maureen Andrew, a Halton police community support officer whos spearheading the application, said the $60,000 police are seeking would help the force put the tracking system into place. She said the radio frequency devices, which could be requested by individual families who feel theyre required, would not only save lives, but also alleviate worry. Many of the police forces around us have this technology like Peel, York, Caledon and the OPP, and until we get the devices we cant co- ordinate with them. There is potential for tragedy to strike. One person dying would be too many, so for loved ones this is just another level of safety. Andrew said in Halton there are 5,000 peo- ple with Alzheimers and 4,795 with dementia. Drowning, prolonged exposure and other wandering-related factors remain among the top causes of death within the autism popula- tion and amongst those suffering with forms of dementia, she said. She said use of the devices could also end up saving the police service money. An average search takes up 924 man hours at about $1,500 an hours, she said. People can vote up to 10 times a day for a grant application until Nov.26. If its one of the 30 top ideas from its round, it will then be entered into the semi-finals, at which point votes can once again be placed. Final judging is between Dec. 20-Jan. 14.
