Crews were sifting through the fire debris on Monday afternoon, looking for evidence of the cause of the fire. Fire investigator Steven Klimpel, from the Office of the Fire Marshal, said evidence will be sent to a forensic sciences lab and results may not return for three to four months. The fire began around 1 a.m. Saturday in the unfinished home in the residential area. The Oakville Fire Department arrived on scene at 1:16 a.m. According to Oakville Fire platoon chief Dan Stacey, it took several hours for firefighters to extinguish the flames. Firefighters were still hosing down the wreckage in the morning. In total, 36 firefighters responded to the fire. During the initial response four pump trucks, two ladders and two rescuers were called to the scene. The fire service did a great job suppressing the fire, Klimpel. When I arrived the actual structural walls were unsafe, so we had to knock them all down to make it safe for entry. When the fire had been subdued, the burned walls were still standing. However, those walls were knocked down and only the homes foun- dation remains. The home had only been completed on the exterior, but was unfinished inside. The inside was just stick framing, there was no drywall, no insulation, Klimpel said. The entire structure of the burned house will have to be rebuilt, including the foundation. Klimpel did not know what will happen to the two damaged neighbouring homes, saying that decision is up to the insurance companies and the builder. Chua is unsure what will happen to his home. Hes consulting with lawyers to see what actions are open to him. Hes also looking into finding long-term accommodations. He also worries about what may have caused the fire. If (its arson), its really too bad for the com- munity because now everyone in that area is at risk, he said. If its arson, then it was contem- plated and with those kinds of things even the best security alarm will probably not be able to prevent this. Shawna Salvo, who owns the damaged house on the other side of the gutted home, said the situation is upsetting. She, her husband and two children were six weeks away from moving into the nearly fin- ished home. The family had waited about two years for the house to be built. Its upsetting because we were excited and looking forward to moving into our home soon. Were grateful that we werent living there and no one was hurt, Salvo said. I would like to say thank you to the fire- fighters. Looking at the pictures I see they worked diligently to save our home. Im grateful we have them.
