For some families, particularly those on Ontario Works or making minimum wage, its simply unaffordable. Halton Region recently released its 2010 Nutritious Food Basket Survey a tool that measures the cost of healthy eating. The overall results show a very basic nutritious diet for a family of four costs $168 a week. Many individuals and families on social assistance, receiving employment insurance, or working in minimum wage jobs do not have an adequate income to purchase nutritious food on a consistent basis. In fact, these individuals often face the difficult choice between meeting their basic shelter needs and meeting their nutritional needs, the report states. The cost of the healthy basket is up four per cent from last year, During the same time the average cost of food only increased by 1.1 per cent, which could be explained by the rising cost of fresh fruits and vegetables. According to the Price of Eating Well in Halton 2010 report, for some households on fixed incomes, a healthy diet is not a viable option. For example, a single, 31-year-old man on Ontario Works receives a total monthly income of just over $600, and the average cost of rent- ing a bachelor apartment in Halton is $731. The cost of a nutritious diet for the month is $244, leaving a $369 shortfall. The report also shows a family of four on Ontario Works living in the region would not be able to afford a nutritious diet. The report says lowering the cost of food is not the solution. When compared to other countries, Canadians already have some of the lowest food prices in the world. For most low-income resi- dents of Halton, the largest expense from 50 to 100 per cent of total income is the cost of housing, which leaves little or no money for food. It also states food banks are not the answer, as they provide a limited selection of food, they often dont have the capacity to store fresh food, and they must restrict the number of times recipients use the services. The report suggests more affordable hous- ing, increased social assistance programs and increasing minimum wage are some solutions to improve access to nutritious food.
