You may not be aware of it, and their data may not yet show it, but companies are constantly making improvements; laws are becoming more stringent all the time and the companies are required to meet ever increasing environmental require- ments. If a company is breaking the law, it is reported to the Ministry of the Environment. The office dispatches an Environmental Officer to investi- gate. They are professionals in this job and their process is methodical and sound. Confrontation with a compa- ny CEO or manager, or with your local MPP, is usually a last resort in serious disputes of valid pollution allegations, not necessarily a first- port-of-call for the suspicion of pol- lution by a neighbouring company. By definition, there is no good pollution. Who can/will decide what is a good, moderate or bad polluter? What kind of criteria will they apply? Any contaminant to a natural sys- tem causing its instability, whether in soil, water or air, is pollution, which means it is hazardous to the health of that system, whether that be a plant, a squirrel family, or your family. Simply ranking pollution into three categories of risk to human health is an oversimplification of complex parametres. This ranking can present the data incorrectly and can unnecessarily create fear in a community, it can wrongly accuse a valid business operator, and it can waste precious time and energy for all involved. Correlating health data with environmental data would yes be interesting, but does, for example, the prevalence of asthma in a neighbourhood have to do with emissions of a neighbouring com- pany, or with the fact that the neighbourhood is located in a damp valley with a high mold count in the housing stock, or perhaps with the fact that the local school has asbestos lining in its old building construction? The Emitter cannot give us the whole picture. Only one part of the picture can turn out to be very dangerous. L. SIMOVIC, OAKVILLE Half the story can be damaging Continued from page 6
