Elvis tribute artist Mark Barsenbach will be performing as The King at a New Years Eve dinner and dance fundraiser in support of the Canadian Cancer Society. He predicts people will have the time of their lives at the show, almost as though the real Elvis was in the Delta Meadowvale Hotel building in Mississauga, where the event will take place. I sort of think Im continuing on where he left off because there are a lot of Elvises that come and they do the big stomachs or the crazy hair, he said. From my perspec- tive, I do my shows authentic and the reason is because I cant sing differently. The way I open up my mouth and sing is the way I nor- mally sing and people have said to me Ive got a singing voice like him. The event will take place in the hotels ballroom, which has seating for 700 people. The performance will be accompanied by a four-course meal and people will be able to rock to the music. The 44-year-old Barsenbach will be per- forming three sets, or about 35 songs that range from as early as Elvis 68 Comeback Special to his Aloha from Hawaii music con- cert, which took place in 1973. Because Barsenbach was musically trained by an opera singer, he said he is able to perform without straining his throat and go on for as long as three sets. I work hard and I give everything, he said. I dont have anything left at the end in my shows. The joy for me is seeing happy faces. Barsenbach moved to Oakville about a year and a half ago from his native country of Australia. He began performing as Elvis just about four years ago when the career fell on him just by chance. Barsenbach and his family were at an Elvis tribute restaurant. The Elvis performer and restaurant owner placed a microphone in front of his mouth during the show, Barsenbach sang one line and a group of women at the restaurant began screaming. He ended up going up to do a few more songs. Afterwards, the owner of the restau- rant offered him a spot in the restaurant about once a month. He threw me a CD and said learn all these songs. Because Im so passionate about Elvis I just really worked hard. I came back in two weeks and I had a rented suit it cost $80 to rent this suit I did the show and I hadnt missed one weekend in 14 months. From there he went on to do parties and then clubs and casinos and so on. When he immigrated to Canada, Barsenbach continued his Elvis tribute career and has performed at Jack Astors restaurants as well as the Collingwood Elvis Festival. Ive been to other Elvis shows and Ive seen people walking out, he said. That actually has motivated me to look and see what it is with those guys that was missing and then I fill in those gaps. At the end of the day, I think thats why Im successful, because you have to fill the needs. Barsenbach will be backed by the Elvis tribute band, Rudy & the Angels. The New Years Eve party starts at 7:30 p.m. with doors opening at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $125.
