However, it is what he has been doing instead of a day job over the past 25 years that promises to entertain audiences later this week in Oakvilles newly-opened Yuk Yuks comedy club. Ive been a comedian for 25 years without a day job, the 49-year-old stand-up comic said of the career hes based mainly on observational humour. He will bring that humour to the stand-up comedy club when he headlines a series of shows Feb. 11-13. A lot of the stuff Ive been doing lately is political and observational. Ive been doing stuff about H1N1 and the government action plan and the economy and the bank bailouts. He also adds a more personal side to the show by joking about growing older. And hes seeing green and blue. One of my big topics these days is the green paranoia, like the environment, green programs, blue bins and green slop baskets, he said. I definitely make light of the situation. Look at here in Oakville; we have a four-colour, 20- page pamphlet on how to do your recycling. Its this kind of hypocrisy that I most make fun of. The wind turbines they are building, apparently if the wind blows too hard, they actually have to shut it down. God forbid we make a few kilo- watts. Foster has been in and out of town as a resi- dent for more than 30 years, but has maintained a steady residence here for the past decade. He attended Queen Elizabeth Park for his final two years of high school and then he attended Sheridan College where he studied advertising. Though he began a career in advertising, which he left in pursuit of a full-time comedy career, Foster still dabbles in marketing. He turned himself into a brand name by adopting the moniker That Canadian Guy more than a decade ago and he can be seen on television wearing his Canadian Guy ties. Theres that whole That Canadian Guy brand Ive created. Its really helped my career a lot because its easy for people to remember. And he still does some advertising work when it gets thrown his way. But comedy is how he earns his bread and butter. He doesnt do many club shows these days, doing mainly private events like corporate gatherings. He regularly appears on television shows such as Just for Laughs, The Winnipeg Comedy Festival, the CBCs The Debaters and has appeared on The Mike Bullard Show. He admits television lacks the spontaneous interac- tion that occurs between the comic and audi- ence at clubs. We have full-time comedy channels now and its all over the Internet, so its a problem getting people to see a live show, but a live show is what comedy is all about. You can be more spontaneous, you can certainly be more edgy. I do everything from the corporate, where you have to be very careful with everything that you say, which is the direct opposite of the club work, where you can take a lot more liberties. He admits television has been both good and bad for his career. It makes it more difficult to get people out to live shows, but it also gives comics publicity and recognition they would not normally get without television.
