We need to reach out and really show people that normally wouldnt become involved in election activities what is at stake and what it is they have to gain through vot- ing NDP, said Sprague. While she will focus on everything in the NDP platform, Sprague said she wants to pay particular attention to healthcare, education and job creation in the election. She wants to address the issue of keeping seniors in their homes because it is cost- effective and keeps them happy, she added. It keeps them from the depression that happens in the long-term facilities, if they have some help. Its the home care help Im quite focused on. Its a reasonable expecta- tion that people can stay in their own homes as they age, said Sprague. As someone who is involved with Halton Healthcare and a mental health committee, Sprague wants to use her candidacy to bring the issues surrounding mental health to light, especially those affecting youths, she said. Our children are being put in jails to be treated for mental health, like Gleb Alfyorov, who just died in the (Oakville) Syl Apps facil- ity. He came to our community for care (and) for a psychiatric assessment, and he was put in jail and nobody knew why, said Sprague. Even though he begged for the help he was promised, he didnt get it and he took his own life. With respect to education, Sprague is interested in helping reduce the load of high tuition costs of post-secondary schools that hang over students heads, she said. Theyre coming out with MBAs and PhDs and not having anywhere to work. They have to go back to community colleges to learn a trade. I promote training in the new fields of green energy (and) environ- mental technology, said Sprague. Sprague said the NDP should look into funding through an education tax on the wealthy or corporations to fund the next generation of workers as a viable alternative to loan programs such as OSAP. These young people are being hit the second they leave university or shortly after, and therefore more and more are staying in (school) longer, and accruing more and more costs, said Sprague. Weve got to stop it and say We are going to find another way." Job creation, cutting corporate tax breaks and reversing recent service job cuts are ways to achieve a sustainable economy, Sprague said. The federal election in May saw the NDP surge in popularity and votes, leading them to take over as Official Opposition. Sprague said even with Jack Laytons health prob- lems, the party hasnt lost momentum and hopes the momentum will carry over at the provincial level in October. Andrea Horwath is an incredibly strong leader. She is personable, real, and, like Jack, she connects with people and thats, I think how we will ride the wave with our leader, said Sprague. If Sprague doesnt win her riding, she said she would maintain a constant NDP presence in Oakville throughout the entire year to keep voters engaged. Get the opinions out there to make headway (and) be the heart of the commu- nity to let people know there was a terrific presence.
