But perhaps more devastating than the change in motor skills, are the non-motor symptoms chang- es in mental health, such as depres- sion, dementia, sleep disorders, and impulsive behaviour. Parkinsons changes everything from finances to relationships. It changes lives. Meet Maureen Thun, who in 2006 was diagnosed with Parkinsons. When you first hear those words you arent really sure how to react, said Thun, a 46-year-old mother and wife. Metabolic Care Clinics will cele- brate its first anniversary on Saturday, Sept. 10. That same year, family and friends came together to form a team for the annual Parkinson SuperWalk and that was just the beginning. Thun eventually took over the reins of the local support group and became a committee member for SuperWalk. This years 10th anni- versary Parkinson SuperWalk for Oakville and Burlington is being held on Sunday, Sept. 11 at Burlington Senior Centre, 2285 New St. in Burlington's Central Park. Registration begins at noon and the walk begins at 1 p.m. The Parkinson SuperWalk is a family event that attracts people of all ages. For more information, visit www.parkinsonsupw- erwalk.ca and support this years national goal of $3 million dollars. We cant do it without you, said Thun who along her journey recognize that very little is really known about PD in the community. With assistance from Parkinson Central Northern Ontario that message is starting to make its way to the sectors that its most needed; hospitals, long-term care facilities and community based programs. A person who relies on medication to make it through a day (in some cases hour to hour) needs to be comforted knowing those caring for them understand the impor- tance of getting their meds on time. A program is being rolled out that is called just that Get it on Time and Thun is part of that program for Burlington/ Oakville area. It can be very scary when youre con- fronted with news like PD, but getting involved was a way for me to put myself at ease said Thun. Ive learned so much about myself with the help of some remarkable people that keep me inspired. Parkinsons affects both men and women and crosses all ethnic lines. Twenty per cent of patients are diagnosed under the age of 40 and that number is expected to grow dra- matically over the next 10 years.
