By Christina Commisso METROLAND WEST MEDIA GROUP A Halton household with a yearly f income of $92,000 is in need o affordable housing, according to a newly released state of housing report. Looking at every aspect of the regions booming housing market, the report presented to the planning and public works committee last week shows Halton is missing targets set out in its housing strategy. The 2010 report shows house- holds earning between $43,200 and $92,400 fall into the affordable hous- ing category which in Halton f means a maximum monthly rent o $2,311 or a maximum home pur- chase price of $308,000. Households earning less than $43,200 yearly fall into the assisted housing category and require some kind of government assistance to rent or own in Halton. Regional targets show 30 per cent of housing should fall within the affordable range ($145,000 to $308,000), which last year accounted for 26 per cent of new houses sold. By working together, were going to have a wonderful and successful campaign for the United Way of Oakville, said Dr. Jeff Zabudsky, CEO and presi- dent of Sheridan College and chair of this years UWO 2011 campaign. Fittingly enough, at Mayor Rob Burtons suggestion, the campaign was officially kicked off with a bus pull at Oakville Transits new facility on Wyecroft Road Tuesday. Also fitting was that as this years campaign cabinet team pulled a Town of Oakville bus aside, it revealed that this years campaign goal is to raise an even $4 million. Its only appropriate that it be a four, as the theme to this years campaign is going to be Do it 4 Oakville, said Zabudsky. By Melanie Cummings SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER The transitions from tragedy to hope to harmony may require giant leaps, but Haltons Interfaith Council con- tinues to forge ahead. Faith leaders, emergency crews, the public and politi- cians gathered at the Towne Square Sunday to mark the decade that has passed since suicide bombers flew two planes into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, and another into the Pentagon near Washington, D.C. killing 3,000 people on Sept. 11, 2001. While we dont know the true intentions of those terrorist murderers, but if their aim was to inspire divi- sion, fear and hate we cannot let them win, said Rabbi Stephen Wise, of the Shaarei-Beth El congrega- tion, to the gathering of about 150 people. p gSee Tenth a e 3 CLAUDIO CUGLIARI / SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Halton missing affordable housing targets See Could page 7 United Way sets $4-M target See Pulling page 4
