You, therefore, will aim three feet to the left before putting the ball. The valuable lesson learned is if the ball actually breaks by four feet, then on the next green you might adjust your sights and allow for a larger break. The same thing is true with your financial life. If your objective was to pay off a certain amount of your consumer debt during the year and you fell short, then next year take that into account and adjust things accord- ingly. Two skills are important on both the put- ting surface and in your financial life. Set a goal. Aim the ball three feet to the left or pay off half your consumer debt within a year. Adjust from time to time to ensure you make use of learned information so each time you can improve your chances of success. Try to harness your natural abilities and set objectives, monitor the results and adjust accordingly. This could be a formula for suc- cess in achieving your financial objectives. One final comment; you might get a golf caddy or investment advisor to help. That is fine, accept their guidance. However, always remember the ultimate responsibility in both golf and investments is yours. Submitted by Peter Watson, Peter Watson Investments, Oakville.
