It was at this point, Godberson opened his curtains to see flames outside his window. A fire had broken out in the pool shed just below Godberson's window and was quickly spreading to the roof of a nearby garage and into the wall of the home. Despite the growing danger, Godberson didn't panic and quickly woke each of his three brothers who were asleep in different parts of the home. Godberson and his brothers then got out of the house and met on the front lawn where Godberson grabbed a cell phone and called 911. He then ran to a neighbours' house to warn them of the fire. The Oakville Fire Department arrived in moments and extinguished the blaze. The cause of the blaze was never determined. Godberson's mother, Cathy, who was in Hawaii with her husband at the time of the fire (having left Godberson's college-age brother in charge), was overwhelmed by her son's actions. "He got everyone out of the house. We're really proud of him," she said. "It was so hard to be so far away and to hear that news because it takes a long time to get home." The Oakville Fire Department was also impressed by Godberson's actions. "He got up and had the wherewithal to call for help and get everybody out," said Harrison. "We nominated him for this award for his actions that very well could have saved his brothers' lives and for knowing what to do." Harrison said Godberson's parents also need to be recognized for training their children in what to do in the event of an emergency. Godberson will receive his award today (Wednesday) at a special reception at Toronto's Sutton Place Hotel. Every year, Ontario fire departments nominate children, organizations, partners, individuals and media whose actions merit a Fire Safety Award. A selection committee reviews the nominations and selects the recipients. IT'S BIG AND IT'S SCARY!
