Vol. 49 No. 147 "USING COMMUNICATION TO BUILD BETTER COMMUNITIES" 48 Pages $1.00 (plus tax) Fareshare Reindeer dreams food drive starts today By Nathan Howes OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF 'Tis the season to help Oakville's Fareshare Food Bank keep its shelves full for the winter. Starting today, (Friday) Fareshare is holding a two-week Christmas food drive to support those in need. This is the volunteer organization's 23rd year of supporting families in the community. "We want to get the maximum amount of food... donated to us because we would like to give our clients as much food as we can -- not limit it to one can or two cans," said volunteer executive director Dudley Clark. "We can never have too much because we will distribute what we have. If we have a lot, we are going to give our clients a lot more." While Fareshare is currently "providing food without difficulty," Clark emphasized the importance of the Christmas food drive because it is the last one until Easter. "Easter is not going to be until April. From the beginning of the year right through to Easter, there are no food drives going on. (People) are living on the donations that we collect this month," said Clark. "There is a certain amount of food coming in regularly -- week in and week out -- but the big quantities come in during the food drives. "We have food, but we want (people) to contribute some more so that we can maintain the high level of quantities we are giving everyone," he noted. The Green Energy and Green Economy Act have lauded the creation of 50,000 green jobs, but McCarter said 30,000 of them are likely to be shortterm construction jobs. Not so, says Flynn. "Usually the auditor general takes a very impartial and non-partisan approach to things and it was a little different this time where he introduced some information on job creation numbers that was instantly called into question by a number of people," said Flynn. "Usually the auditor general uses sources that are beyond reproach. In this case, I don't think the ink was dry on the report and groups who know what they are talking about were coming forward and saying, `No, you can't use those figures because they are out of date' or `You can't use those figures because that's like comparing apples and oranges.'"
