Atom BB Hornets advance to provincials Losing only one of six games in their round-robin regional qualifier, the Oakville atom BB Hornets secured a spot in the upcoming Ontario Women's Hockey Association provincial championship tournament. Oakville won both its games against Halton, earned a win and a tie against Burlington, and split a pair of contests against Mississauga to finish with the most points of the four teams. Needing a victory in their last game against Mississauga to advance, the Hornets prevailed 10 as captain Bridget O'Neil scored on a wraparound late in the second period. In their six regional playdown contests, the Hornets outscored their opposition 13-3. Adding helpers were MacKenzie Stamper, Charlotte Aziz, Taylor Mair, Sarah Kozma, Breeann Gallagher, Claire Merrick, Chloe Morrison, Kate Barkley and Taylor Fitzpatrick, while goaltender Dayna O'Hanlon posted three shutouts and an 0.50 goals-against average. The Hornets are currently competing in a North Metro League playoff series against Clearview. far has been "overwhelming", noting that all the MUSS spring camps are likely to sell out despite the fact they have received little media exposure to date. That might change when MUSS announces its longterm plans in Oakville, which are likely to include the building of new facilities. Van der Laan said MUSS will launch its marketing plan in a couple months and expects it to be "a national event". According to van der Laan, the MUSS camps will focus on individual skill development as opposed to tactical instruction, something he believes is important at a young age. "Manchester United has always been known for attractive attacking flair football with great wing players and a lot of technique -- attacking over the flanks, getting balls into the box and creating chances with a lot of flair," he said. "We have looked at the absolute top players in the world and these top players have the extra five percent of quality. They can receive a ball under pressure, create a chance and score a goal to win the game. We have taken that bit of excellency and based our whole program on that." MUSS camps also focus on teaching life skills and self esteem, van der Laan said, as well as having fun. The camps will feature unique coaching aids, such as mannequins for players to dribble around or a large dartboard-like shooting target that players can try to hit with long lofted passes. While the MUSS camps are not affiliated with the Oakville Soccer Club or the North Oakville Female Soccer Club, van der Laan emphasizes they are not in competition with local clubs either. "We don't want players to miss training in their own programs," he said. "We would want anyone who made their commitment to their team and coaching curriculum to honour that. We are a supplementary program." Each spring course is 75 minutes in length each day, while summer courses will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information on the Manchester United Soccer Schools, visit the organization's website at www.muss.ca or call Robin van der Laan at 905-8473649.
