Continued from page 4 Patients need support "My three kids and my husband were my rock through this. I feel for other women out there who are going through the same thing and I just hope and pray they have some support because you really need it." Jennifer Holden, Oakville 13 · Friday, January 20, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com She had lost her own father to cancer at the age of 16 and was afraid her own children could suffer the same terrible experience of losing a parent. This fear, however, also filled her with determination to fight her cancer and prevent it from taking her away from her family. "My three kids and my husband were my rock through this," said Jennifer. "I feel for other women out there who are going through the same thing and I just hope and pray they have some support because you really need it." While she was only 10 years old at the time, Jennifer said, Leah understood the situation and began trying to help where she could. This included raising more than $400 for the Wellspring Cancer Support Network by setting up a snack stand on her street with some friends. She also attended some of her mother's chemotherapy treatments and accompanied Jennifer on a wig-shopping trip after she lost her hair. "It was kind of interesting to see what would happen during the chemo," said Leah. "I felt like going because I wanted to see what would happen and how they did it." Jennifer's children and husband were all present at Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga INPUT REQUESTED on the 2011-12 LONG-TERM ACCOMMODATION PLAN Parents & community members are invited to review and give feedback on the Halton District School Board's 2011-2012 Long-Term Accommodation Plan. This plan addresses the existing and projected accommodation needs of students in elementary and secondary schools and identifies new capital project initiatives, such as the need for new schools. Web videos outlining the Long-Term Accommodation Plan for Burlington, Halton Hills, Milton, and Oakville are available online at www.hdsb.ca when Jennifer rang a special bell marking the end of her chemotherapy treatment. Leah said she likes her new shorter hair cut and said she has had support from other children at school as several of them have cut their hair for cancer at one time or another. Jennifer said one of the sadder parts of her experience was realizing just how many people in this community are struggling with cancer. "Going through this, I was meeting far too many people and young women too. It didn't matter the age," said Jennifer. "The fact that cancer is so rampant really surprised me." The Long-Term Accommodation Plan is posted on the Board's website. Follow the link from the main page under "Program and Accommodation".
