"I've been in the corporate world for almost 40 years (as executive director for the Toronto-based Osborne Group) and when the chance came up to join United Way of Oakville, it was a fabulous opportunity for me to bring my corporate experience to the table, but also fulfill my philanthropic side," Burton said. "It was an incredible opportunity to mesh the two. "I was also well aware if I was going to make a change in my career, this was probably going to be the last opportunity I would have to do so. When you reach 65 (years of age), you don't have the same energy as before," she chuckled. Combining work with a passion led now retiring United Way of Oakville (UWO) CEO Barbara Burton into the Burton is now retiring from the UWO as CEO and says the time is right to do so. "This last campaign was my sixth (with United Way of Oakville) and it is a very stressful environment and Barbara Burton I'm 65," she said. "I decided in order for the organization to continue to grow and reach new heights, it really needed new leadership." Black History celebration The Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton (CCAH) and the Oakville Museum will kick off Black History Month at Oakville Town Hall on Thursday, Feb. 2. The event runs 6:30-8:30 p.m. and will feature a musical performance by Sugar and Gold with blues and gospel duo Diana Braithwaite and Chris Whiteley. There will also be an exhibit of Oakville's black history, a collection of African Canadian art and storytelling. The event is free. Town Hall is located at 1225 Trafalgar Rd. SMLS Mosaic The students of St. Mildred'sLightbourn School (SMLS) invite the community to come celebrate cultural diversity with them. The eighth annual Mosaic Multicultural Festival is at the school Thursday, Feb. 2. It's also a fundraiser for local and international charities. The showcase will represent 42 countries and six continents through food, fashion and demonstrations. Tickets cost $6 for adults. The event runs from 7-9 p.m. For information, contact 905-845-2386.
