MICHAEL IVANIN / OAKVILLE BEAVER Ridge beats Loyola in Bur Bear Purple final The Iroquois Ridge Trailblazers defeated the Loyola Hawks 6-2 in an all-Oakville Purple Pool final at last weekend's Bur Bear high school boys' hockey tournament in Burlington. Ridge finished the tournament undefeated in its six games. The Trailblazers went 2-0-1 in round-robin play, then defeated the Holy Trinity Titans 3-2 in the quarterfinals and edged Timmins 4-3 (in a shootout) in the semis. Loyola had won its first five games of the tournament before its loss to Ridge. The Hawks were 3-0 in preliminary action before whipping Corpus Christi 9-2 in the quarter-finals and blanking M.M. Robinson 2-0 in the semifinals. The Bur Bear tournament featured 44 teams and three pools. Sixteen teams -- including the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders -- played in the top-tiered Gold Pool, while the other 28 squared off in the Purple/White play- downs. The top eight teams from preliminary-round action advanced to the Purple Pool playoffs, with the next eight relegated to the White Pool playoffs. Aquinas went 0-2-1 in Gold Pool competition and was eliminated after round-robin play. The Abbey Park Eagles joined Ridge, Trinity and Loyola as local teams to qualify for the Purple Pool playoffs, but Abbey Park dropped its quarter-final contest 6-2 to Timmins. T.A. Blakelock, Appleby College and White Oaks also competed in the tournament. Appleby reached the White Pool semifinals before losing 4-1 to North Bay's West Ferris, while both Blakelock and White Oaks went winless in three games. Kitchener's Grand River was the Gold Pool champion, defeating Georgetown's Christ the King 4-3 in a shootout. Burlington's Notre Dame won the White Pool with a 4-3 shootout victory over West Ferris.
