Time to register for Team Up for Terry kickoff It's been 32 years since Terry Fox dipped his artificial leg in the Atlantic Ocean and embarked on his cross-Canada Marathon of Hope. Since Terry Fox's death in 1981 from osteosarcoma (bone cancer), the Terry Fox Run has grown to involve millions of participants in more than 60 countries and is now the world's largest one-day fundraiser for cancer research. More than $500 million has been raised worldwide in Terry's name to produce better treatments for many different types of cancers. Each September, thousands of Oakville residents come together at Coronation Park to honour Terry by participating in the local Terry Fox Run. This year, for the first time, local organizers are inviting businesses and residents to a very special Team Up For Terry Fox kickoff breakfast at Town Hall (1225 Trafalgar Rd.) on Wednesday, April 18 from 7:30-9 a.m. to learn more about how they can get involved in this year's Terry Fox Run. Teaming up for Terry is a special opportunity to come together to make a difference in the fight against cancer and to bond as families, friends, teammates and colleagues while showing your commitment to giving back. With no entry fee or minimal required donation, the only expectations are the ones set for an organization by its Terry Fox Team Captain. The breakfast will feature some of the participating teams and their stories. Lee Scott, founder of WoW Power Walking, is the team captain for the Team Darrell, inspired by the late Darrell Atherley. Scott will be joined by members of the Atherley family and other members of Team Darrell to share their story. In 2010, Darrell Atherley inspired a team of his closest friends and family to take part in the Oakville Terry Fox Run. Atherley had been diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2009, and following chemotherapy he had several surgeries to remove his bladder, prostate and after the cancer metastasized to his spine, seven vertebrae were fused together. Atherley was there to cheer on his team that year, but just two months later, cancer took his life. In 2011, Team Darrell was even stronger, with more than 200 members taking part in memory of their inspiration raising a record amount for the Oakville event. Oakville's Ward 6 Councillor Max Khan is recovering from a relapse of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Khan is a cancer survivor and he will share his cancer journey at the kickoff. "I am humbled to have a team taking part in my honour in this year's Terry Fox Run. The Oakville community has shown such support to me and my family during my illness, and I am thrilled that Team Max will kick off at the breakfast." Team Max will be taking part for the first time at this year's Terry Fox Run. "Terry Fox had a dream of a world without cancer. Together we can carry on Terry's dream," said Ward 2 Town Councillor Pam Damoff, who is also the chair of the Oakville Terry Fox Run. "This breakfast will be a pep rally for Terry and his message of hope, giving everyone who attends the inspiration and tools to go out and create their own team for this year's event" Rounding out the speakers will be Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn, whose Team Flynn takes part in the Terry Fox Run each year. To register for the kickoff, RSVP to Keri Schoonderwoerd at keri. schoonderwoerd058@sympatico.ca by Tuesday, April 10. Team Up For Terry is an initiative of the Terry Fox Foundation, encouraging members of the public to put together a team of friends, family, co-workers or teammates. Teams can be inspired by others, such as Team Darrell or Team Max, or as a way to involve a business in the event, or like Team Flynn, as a way to take part in the Terry Fox Run. 11 · Wednesday, April 4, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com Teams can be as few as three people or as many as 200 or more.
