"This disease, the source of it is unknown. It can afflict someone in anyone's family and age seems to not make a difference," said Judy. "People need to be aware that this disease exists. The cure is the bone marrow transplant, but that can't be done unless there is an increase in numbers of donors registered." Furthermore, the Hakims say it costs nothing to save a person's life. "This time is different. He's deteriorating and it's not like before. Before, he would have energy and do things, but not now. Now, he's really a couch potato." Judy Hakim, Oakville resident "They say you should help people who are less fortunate. This isn't money. There are other ways to help and it doesn't cost anything to give blood, or sign up and become a donor on the OneMatch website," Judy said. During his seven years with the disease, Mahmoud has remained positive, has tried to stay active when he can and even worked when he was off chemo treatments. "Mentally, he has a really good attitude. We say he's a trooper. He deals with this every single day," Judy said. However, the disease has advanced. His platelet (cell fragment) levels are very low, reducing Mahmoud's energy and he requires a transfusion two to three times per week to increase the levels. Mahmoud is unable to do strenuous work and his wife drives him to the hospital, being off work on compassionate care leave. "This time is different. He's deteriorating and it's not like before. Before, he would have energy and do things, but not now. Now, he's really a couch potato," Judy said.
