The ministry is currently working to get the Ontario Legislature to pass Bill 13, also known as the Accepting Schools Act, before the summer break, so that the rules can take effect Ontario Education for the new Minister Laurel Broten school year in September. The anti-bullying bill is currently before committee awaiting its third reading. The private member's bill has caused a clash between the Liberals who brought it forward and the Progressive Conservatives who had their own anti-bullying bill, Bill 14, which also passed second reading. The major difference between the two appears to be the ability of students in Bill 13 to start clubs and organizations to have conversations on issues involving race, gender, and sexual orientation, amongst other things. The meeting, postponed from March 19, was to examine the Town's proposed Radiocommunications Facilities Protocol and whether cell towers should be the previously contemplated 200 metres or 20 metres away from sensitive land uses. Mayor Rob Burton said the meeting would also address whether Oakville benefits from having a Radiocommunications Facilities Protocol at all. Interest in the cell tower issue, and the possible health impacts of having towers nearby, is high in Oakville and more than 100 people packed Council Chambers Monday. So many have registered to speak, council continued the meeting last night (Tuesday), but still didn't expect to finish up. Monday, council heard presentations by officials from the federal institutions of Industry Canada and Health Canada. Holt said that while the power to approve cell towers rests with Industry Canada, the organization believes the concerns and suggestions expressed by Land Use Authorities (LUAs), like the Town of See Town page 9 BOOK YOUR PARTY AND RECEIVE FREE LOOT BAGS! 905.337.2789 Up to $5.99.
