Diamond Jubilee winners and dinner with a prince By John Bkila OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Two prominent Oakville residents have been recognized with a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in honour of their significant contributions to the community. Shae Invidiata and Julia Hanna, both nominated by Oakville MP Terence Young, are among 60,000 Canadians recognized this year by the commemorative medal, created to mark the 2012 celebration of the 60th anniversary of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. In the case of Invidiata, the honour is doubled, as she has also been invited by Young's office to accompany the MP to meet Prince Charles of Wales and his wife, Duchess Camilla of Cornwall, at a dinner on Tuesday (May 22). "I literally fell off my seat... It's just a very honouring opportunity that Terence has placed me in and I'm forever grateful for that," said Invidiata, who assures everyone who asks, that she is reading up on the proper ways to greet members of the Royal Family and practising her curtsy. Invidiata and Hanna will be officially recognized and receive their medals at a ceremony on Friday, June 1 at the Harbour Banquet Hall and Conference Centre at 2340 Ontario St. Hanna, a local restaurateur and chef, is the brainchild behind the non-profit organization Kids Culinary Community (KCC), Julia Hanna which teaches kids (and adults) the importance of eating healthy and well. "It's probably the most important work I've done in the 30 years I've been in the restaurant business," she said. "We don't acknowledge how important food is in our lives sometimes. We take it for granted. Simply, culinary traditions, generations ago, were passed on from generation to generation... and people were given a life skill. When convenience food stepped in, promising a freedom of time, Hanna said, it brought with it the cost of an increasing rate of obesity in children and people no longer connecting at the Full Delivery: New Homes, Alexanian Carpet, Adele Ontario, Global Gold Trader, Smart Source, Holland Park Garden, Oakville Wrap, Michael's of Canada For home delivery & customer service call (905) 845-9742 Mon., Tues. 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Wed., Thu., and Fri. 9 a.m.-7 p.m. (open for calls only after 5 p.m.) Closed Sat. and Sun. "There is now a huge void in people learning how to feed themselves properly and connecting with each other," she said. With the motto of `changing the world, one meal at a time', Hanna decided to create a program -- initially held in her restaurant -- that would teach kids and adults how to cook healthy foods and reconnect with each other in their day-to-day lives. Funded by local families, the Gugliettis and the Baldassarras, KCC (www.kidsculinary.ca) has grown to include a community garden located at Dundas Street and Neyagawa Boulevard, while the program is now run in the teaching kitchens at local Longo's stores -- the grocery chain is a co-founding member of the program. Hanna said she was quite overwhelmed when she learned she was being awarded and recognized with the Diamond Jubilee Medal, calling it a humbling experience. "Any time this kind of recognition happens, it just pivots this Shae Invidiata program even further, because we have to create awareness," she said. "It's about leaving a better community for kids." It's a sentiment that Invidiata, the founder of free-them (www.freethem.ca), shares.
