www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, May 24, 2012 · 28 Jr. Devils will look to put senior program back on top Continued from page 26 perennial champs was enough. "Every time you play OT it's going to push you," said White Oaks coach Mike Moore. "Those are the games that make you better. We both have strong programs and it's going to be a good challenge for us the next few years." Oakville Trafalgar will not be lacking motivation either. In the game following the junior final, OT's seniors lost the Halton final for just the second time in 42 years, falling to Abbey Park. That's going to mean more big games for the likes of Blackwell and his teammates joining the senior squad next year. They've already shown the ability to rise to the occasion. After the two close calls against White Oaks in the past year, the Red Devils managed to make the necessary adjustments. They won last week's regular-season finale between the teams 38-5 and then jumped in front early in Wednesday's Halton final. Blackwell, Scott Mitchell, Pat Sadler and Josiah Roche all scored first-half tries as OT built a 22-7 lead. Alex Fulton added a try in the second half and he and Liam Newman each had a convert. Now it will be up to those players to restore OT's winning tradition in the senior ranks next year. There, the games will be big in both meaning and stature. "We have a great senior program," said the 6-foot-3 Blackwell. "There are some really big guys playing. It's going to be fun." -- Herb Garbutt can be followed on Twitter @Herbgarbutt NIKKI WESLEY / OAKVILLE BEAVER / @HALTON_PHOTOG SLOW DOWN: White Oaks Wildcats player Ben Everett (in yellow) tries to stop Oakville Trafalgar's Jackson Finkbeiner during yesterday's (Wednesday's) Halton junior boys' rugby Tier 1 final at Burlington's Sherwood Forest Park. The Abbey Park Eagles ended OT's 11-year championship run yesterday (Wednesday), blasting the Red Devils 32-10 in the Tier 1 senior final at Burlington's Sherwood Forest Park. Abbey Park's victory marked only the second time in 42 years that the Red Devils have not hoisted the Halton trophy, and avenged a loss to OT in last year's Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) bronze-medal game. The Devils had also defeated the Eagles in the previous three Halton finals. See Friday's edition of the Beaver for full details on the game. SAVE TIME.
