Appleby College students committed to Relay For Life The students at Appleby College are once again hosting a fundraiser for the Relay For Life -- and they couldn't be more excited about it. The 12-hour event, which supports the Canadian Cancer Society's Relay For Life, takes place June 1-2, from 7 p.m.-7 a.m. The event has a special place in the hearts of the students, parents and teachers as it is the 11th year the school has sponsored the fundraiser. However, the student commitment is what is most remarkable. This year, the Upper One (Grade 9) students are taking ownership of organizing, planning and running many aspects of the event. Appleby does not believe in simply sending students out into the community without first educating them about the cause or the people whom they are helping. For example, on a daily basis, senior students are part of a service learning co-curricular program that does just that. Students learn about a cause or organization and then volunteer in the community, supported by a faculty member who is their mentor much like a coach of a sports team. During the process, there are many opportunities for reflection and faculty members capitalize on the teachable moments. Relay For Life is no different. This year, 15 Upper One student leaders 5 · Friday, May 25, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com Submitted photo Fundraising to beat cancer: Upper One (Grade 9) students at Appleby College are once again taking part in a 12-hour fundraising event in support of the Relay For Life. To kick start the process, the ninth graders learned about the various tasks that go into planning and executing an event. Through an online survey they voted on 11 different volunteer tasks. They determined what they thought were the most important jobs when running an event and then, which task their group would like to "own." The students were then assigned a "specialist" for their task who worked with the students to help create their ideas and facilitate the students with the skills needed to make an action plan. Various groups are working on luminaries, transportation, drop-off, a children's activity area, yoga and nutrition area, food service, maintenance, a spirit squad, the cancer survivor tent, entertainment, and flags/ photos/social media. Each group has been given the task of enhancing their area. The students are very creative and the ideas are already flowing. Andrew Roberts' advisor group picked the task of designing additional activities for the children. "Our idea was to make a children's activity tent like a cozy bedroom," Roberts said. "We plan to read a story called No Clean Clothes by Robert Munsch. Children will have the option to decorate a t-shirt and then hang it up on a clothes line in the tent. We wanted something that was really interactive and fun for the kids." The spirit squad was an activity designed by Maggie Irving, Relay For Life co-ordinator. She hopes that it enhances the energy of the event.
