RODC invites people to rally for democracy Saturday Reclaim Our Democratic Canada (RODC), will hold a rally at the Oakville Towne Square, Saturday, to protest a federal budget bill, which they feel seeks to change too much, too quickly and with not enough examination. The Oakville-based group's event will last from noon-1 p.m., and is part of a national action intended to draw attention to the federal government's budget bill C-38. Bev LeFrancois, RODC co-ordinator, said Bill C-38 is a 452-page Omnibus Bill that makes modifications to 60 different laws concerning the environment, immigration, pensions, employment and more. "It is felt by a lot of Canadians across Canada that important issues are not being individually debated sufficiently," she said. "It is the belief of Reclaim Our Democratic Canada that each one is important and should be looked at in more detail." LeFrancois said some of the changes include a reform to Old Age Security that would see the age of eligibility for the program raised from 65 to 67 years. This increase would occur over a six-year period starting in 2023. The bill would also see employment insurance recipients split into three categories based on how often they've claimed employment insurance in the past. Those dubbed frequent users would be given six weeks of employment insurance to look for work in a similar occupation before they would be expected to take a job out of their field. The Green Party of Canada has also been critical of bill C-38, stating it attacks environmental legislation by repealing the Kyoto Protocol Implementation Act, cancelling the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy, and rewriting the Fisheries Act, the Species at Risk Act, and the Navigable Waters Protection Act. "Canadians need a chance to have a lot more debate on these issues," said LeFrancois. "Doing things this way is really an attack on democracy." LeFrancois said Saturday's rally is intended as a message, calling on all MPs to vote `no' on the passing of the bill C-38 and for the contentious and controversial changes to be removed from the bill and examined on their own so they can receive proper scrutiny. Oakville's Towne Square is on Lakeshore Road East, just east of George Street. 11 · Thursday, May 31, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com Universal Driving Education Inc.
