The soft light of the luminaries has become synonymous with the spirit of Relay for Life, an overnight, non-competitive event that sees teams of 10-15 cancerfighters taking turns walking, running or strolling around a track. Sold during the event or available for purchase beforehand, the luminaries are candles that are placed in a special fireproof paper bag to burn. Each bag bears the name of someone who has won, or lost, their battle with cancer. Purchasing a luminary at a Relay for Life is a way to honour friends and loved family members who have faced cancer. The luminaries are then placed along the edge of the Relay track and provide a source of light and inspiration for the team members as they walk. Often, they are used to spell words like Hope. Luminaries can be purchased in advance at the Halton Division office, from any Relay For Life team member or onsite for $5 each. Funds raised by Relay for Life support the society's mission by helping to save, improve and enrich the lives of Canadians. This money helps fund crucial research into cancer treatment. Today, more than 60 per cent of Canadians diagnosed with cancer will survive compared to about 25 per cent in the 1940s, according to figures from the Canadian Cancer Society.
