www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, May 31, 2012 · 20 Raes are taking fundraising to new heights By Brice Roy SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER An Oakville man's fundraising efforts are about to put him near the top of the world. Four years ago, Bill Rae's wife, Patricia, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). Ever since, the two have been tirelessly raising money for the MS Society of Canada. This year, Bill Rae is about to take their efforts to another level, literally. He is challenging himself with scaling Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania with a group called MS Climb in September. The goal is to raise more than $15,000 in support of the local Halton chapter of the MS Society of Canada. While Rae says Patricia is in "pretty good shape right now," he knows others are not as fortunate. "I know there are a lot of people that aren't as lucky as we are. So I figured what the heck, I'll do this and raise some money," said Rae. "I wanted to help out some people and it sounded like a good idea." Ralph Cochrane started MS Climb five years ago with the idea of raising money quickly to fight the disease. Cochrane was inspired by his mother who suffered from the illness and his love of travel. "I wanted to make a more noticeable impact. So I tried to come up with an idea where you could raise a larger amount of money in a shorter amount of time. I chose something that I'm really passionate about," said Cochrane. The goal of MS Climb is to raise $1 million in five years and so far it is well on its way. Approximately $870,000 has been raised with the hope that by the end of this year, the goal will be reached. MS Climb offers four different bucket list trips for fundraisers of all ages, as well as a hiking and camping trip to the Bruce Trail. The buckets are trips to China's Great Wall, Machu Pichu in Peru, Mt. Everest base camp in Nepal and Rae's trip to Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Everyone who attempts the climbs is required to raise $15,000 for the MS Society of Canada as well as pay their own way to their destination. About a third of the way to the $15,000, the Raes have been raising their contribution with several unique methods. The two did a wine raffle last November that raised $2,000 and had a few garage sales. "Anybody who has something they don't need I say `Hey, give it to me'," said Rae. "I'll see if I can get a couple bucks for it... $5 here, $10 there, it all adds up." As part of their fundraising, Bill and submitted photo Patricia have two upcoming events.
