Ribbers will bring trade secrets to Ribfest By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF For some, it's a seasonal obsession. For others, the passion is yearlong. Ribbers come in many shapes and sizes, and from June 22-24 all those shapes and sizes will be here for the first Oakville Family Ribfest. The Rotary Club of Oakville Trafalgar-sponsored event has drawn seven rib-cooking artisans, who will give residents the opportunity to taste their creations when the event kicks off on the grounds of Sheridan College, 1430 Trafalgar Rd. Oakville ribber Mike Cuttle will be among those participating. "As a local guy who employs local people and pays taxes in the community, I think it's a great opportunity for us to be one of the players," said Cuttle. "We really appreciate the chance Rotary gave us." Cuttle co-owns Puckz Pub at the Sixteen Mile Sports Complex, Jake's Boathouse Restaurant in Brampton and Jake's Grill and Oyster House in Burlington. They all have ribs on the menu. While Cuttle said he does not participate in the extensive ribfest summer circuit, like some other ribbers do, he does attend ribfests in Brampton and Erin, Ont. annually. "We've been serving ribs in our restaurants for 32-plus years, so we think we're pretty good at it. Customers tell us we have a great `fall off the bone' flavour, " said Cuttle. "It's one of the things we've been known for over the years. We steam our ribs in beer and there are a lot of interesting flavours in our ribs." Cuttle said that besides being a fun family event to participate in, the new ribfest is great because it gives him the opportunity to promote his business. Dave Kent, owner of Guelph's Silver Bullet Bar-B-Q rigs, is not affiliated with any restaurant and during the winter he works with bikes at Guelph's Royal Distributing. During the summer, however, he attends ribfests in Ottawa, Brockville, Cobourg, Bowmanville, Whitby, Pickering, Etobicoke, Mississauga, Burlington, Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, Guelph, Gravenhurst, Barrie and more.
