The tournament, which begins tomorrow (Thursday) and concludes Saturday, will feature 16 teams from across Ontario. All games will be played at the Oakville Soccer Club's Pine Glen facility. Trinity coach and tournament covener Peter Bonfiglio says Holy Trinity is extremely excited to be hosting such a prestigious tournament. "Something like this has not been done (in Oakville) for soccer, so it's pretty exciting. For Oakville and Burlington, it's a hot bed for soccer with Oakville having the second-largest club in North America," he said. Bonfiglio first thought about hosting the 2012 tournament when the Titans were competing at the 2010 event in Stoney Creek. "We were at a coaches meeting and they had told me they were looking for hosts, so I put my bid in while knowing Thornhill was hosting the 2011 tournament. Then shortly after that, I found out we were chosen to host this year's OFSAA," he said. Titans won silver last year Trinity will be making its third straight OFSAA appearance at the tournament. Bonfiglio hopes the Titans can improve on their silver-medal showing of a year ago. "Of course we would like to do well, but whatever happens, happens. Last year we got silver but this year it's a different team, totally different animal, and we hope that our group can (keep) elevating as we have throughout the season," he said. "When you're hosting, you obviously want to be in the show, not just make it." Some associations give their respective teams automatic berths into OFSAA. However, Holy Trinity still had to qualify in order to host the tournament. With teams like Burlington's Notre Dame and defending champion Mother Teresa of London, Bonfiglio knows the competition will be fierce for the secondseeded Titans. "There is never an easy game out there. It's the provincials so every single one is going to be tough. Notre Dame remains our rivals but we respect each other and we know what to expect with them," he said. The two rivals could cross paths again at this week's Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations championships, which Trinity is hosting at Oakville Soccer Club's Pine Glen facility. Six other Oakville teams at provincials While the Holy Trinity Titans girls' soccer team hosts the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) quad-A championships this week, six other local teams are competing at OFSAA tournaments in other parts of the province. Three of those squads come from St. Thomas Aquinas, which qualified teams for the boys' soccer, girls' soccer and girls' rugby double-A tournaments. Oakville Trafalgar and Abbey Park are competing in the provincial rugby AAA/AAAA girls' and boys' tournaments, respectively, while King's Christian Collegiate makes its sixth straight appearance at boys' soccer single-A OFSAA. AQUINAS The Raiders are the third seed in the girls' double-A soccer tourney in St. Thomas. Aquinas will play its first two games tomorrow (Thursday), a 9:30 a.m. start against the St. Michael Mustangs and an 11:30 a.m. clash with the St. Paul Golden Bears. The Raiders will conclude the round-robin schedule Friday with games against the St. Francis Phoenix (8 a.m.) and St. Martin Mustangs (11 a.m.). Aquinas' boys are the ninth seed at their soccer tournament in North Bay. The Raiders take on St. Mary's tomorrow at 8:30 a.m., followed by a 3 p.m. meeting with Prince Edward CI. Friday, Aquinas will tangle with top-seeded Cardinal Carter at 11 a.m., then face Fort Frances at 2 p.m. Semis in both tournaments will be played Saturday morning, with bronzemedal games at 1 p.m. The girls' goldmedal game will be played at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, and the boys' will take place at 3 p.m. The Raiders' rugby team, 12th-ranked at the A/AA girls' tourney in Ottawa, had advanced to the consolation quarter-finals as of yesterday afternoon. Aquinas opened the tournament Monday with a 20-7 loss to fifth-seeded Merivale, then bounced back to down Beamsfield 7-3 yesterday morning. Kasia Gryc scored a try in each game for Aquinas, which was scheduled to face St. Anne yesterday afternoon. The consolation final is slated for 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. OAKVILLE TRAFALGAR As of yesterday afternoon, second-seeded OT had advanced to the semifinals at the girls' rugby AAA/AAAA competition in Ottawa. The Red Devils blanked St. Peter High 26-0 Monday, then downed Mayfield 22-5 in the second round yesterday. OT was slated to face either St. Peter Secondary or Malvern at 4 p.m. yesterday. The tournament's medal games will be played today. ABBEY PARK Fourth-place finishers a year ago, the Eagles hope to crack the podium this See Abbey Park, page 27
