Omnibus budget bill too much, too fast: RODC Reclaim Our Democratic Canada (RODC) rallied at Oakville Town Square Saturday to protest the federal government's budget bill C-38. About 60 people attended to speak out and raise awareness about the bill, which rally organizers said seeks to change too much federal legislation too quickly and with too little study. Bev LeFrancois, RODC co-ordinator, said the 452 page Omnibus Bill modifies 60 different laws concerning the environment, immigration, pensions, employment and more. "Most people didn't know what budget bill C-38 was about, but said they will now pay attention," LeFrancois, who handed out material during the rally, told The Oakville Beaver. "I guess that is all we can ask. We have got to stop using omnibus bills to govern Canada as Canadians don't have proper input and years of legislation by former governments of all parties is being changed without proper analysis." The Oakville demonstration was one of an estimated 50 held across the country. LeFrancois said changes include a reform to Old Age Security that would see the age of eligibility raised from 65 to 67. This increase would occur over a six-year period starting in 2023. The bill would also see employment insurance 3 · Wednesday, June 6, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com (E.I.) recipients split into three categories based on how often they've claimed E.I. Those dubbed frequent users would be given six weeks of employment insurance to look for work in a similar occupation before they would be expected to take a job out of their field. The Green Party of Canada has criticized bill C-38 stating it attacks environmental legislation by repealing the Kyoto Protocol Implementation Act, cancelling the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy, and rewriting the Fisheries Act, the Species at Risk Act, and the Navigable Waters Protection Act. LeFrancois said many proposed changes need to be taken out of the bill and examined individually rather than pushed through en masse.
