Relief from heat wave is expected tomorrow Residents are encouraged to call or visit friends and neighbours who may also be at risk and are warned to never leave children, pets or vulnerable individuals unattended in a car. One health risk, extreme heat exposure, can be identified through its numerous symptoms, such as rapid breathing, weakness or fainting, headache and or confusion, nausea, dizziness, blurred vision, convulsions and high-body temperature. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek medical attention immediately. Residents can avoid heat-related illness by staying out of the sun or heat, and going to air-conditioned sites, such as shopping malls and community centres. For a list of cooling centres in Halton, visit www.halton.ca/heatalert. Residents should also avoid strenuous outdoor activity and, if possible, reschedule sports practices and jogging times. It is also recommended to drink lots of water and natural fruit juices (avoid alcohol, caffeine). Cooling centres, which will be in effect in Oakville until Labour Day include: · Town Hall -- Monday-Sunday from 8 a.m.-9 p.m. · Central Library Branch -- MondayThursday from 10 a.m.-9 p.m.; FridaySaturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; and Sunday from 1-5 p.m. Continued from page 1 3 · Thursday, June 21, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com NIKKI WESLEY / OAKVILLE BEAVER / @halton_photog stay cool: CJ Martin changes her sign to bring in people from the heat during the start of the heat wave on Tuesday. It felt like 42C with the humidex. The story was repeated yesterday. Relief is expected with temperatures anticipated to drop by tomorrow (Friday). · Glen Abbey Community Centre, Iroquois Ridge Community Centre, River Oaks Community Centre and Sixteen Mile Sports Complex -- Monday-Friday from 7 a.m.-10:30 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday from 8 a.m.-10:30 p.m. · Oakville Seniors' Centre and Sir John Colborne Seniors' Centre -- Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. During heat alerts, the Town's splash pads will be in operation until 10 p.m. For information on the Town's pools locations and schedules, visit www.oakville. ca/culturerec/public-swimming.html or call 905-845-6601. To keep cool, residents can also visit area beaches, however, the Region is currently advising people to stay clear of a few of them. Due to high levels of bacteria, the Region says the beaches at Oakville's Bronte Beach Park, Coronation Park West and Coronation Park East are unsafe for swimming. The situation is the same for the beaches at Burlington's Beachway North and Beachway South. The Region said swimming is safe, however, at the beach in Kelso Conservation Area in Milton and Prospect Park Old Beach in Acton. These findings are based on testing conducted on Monday, June 18.
