Residents updated on coyotes Continued from page 2 This woman eventually stopped putting out food, but only after being threatened with a $50,000 fine by the Town. While coyotes that have lost their fear of humans can be dangerous, Benneian said actual attacks on humans are incredibly rare. Benneian said there was one coyote bite in Oakville in January -- the only one authorities are able to recall taking place in the town. However, the previous year saw 281 cat bites or scratches serious enough to be reported and 222 dog bites. Upon encountering a coyote, Benneian urged residents not to run, as this will trigger its predator instinct and prompt the animal to give chase. "You have to face it, make eye contact with it and then start to yell in a big loud voice. "If you have a particularly stubborn coyote or a young one who hasn't encountered humans before and is curious and is standing there looking at you even though you are yelling and waving your arms, throw something at it." Residents walking a small dog who encounter a coyote are advised to pick up the dog. Residents with a large dog, who find themselves being followed by a coyote, need not be concerned as the animal probably sees the large dog as a rival and is just making sure it leaves its territory. While some in Oakville have said killing coyotes is a better solution, Benneian said this is impractical as the animals are territorial, meaning that when one family is killed another imme- diately moves in and claims that vacated territory. She also pointed out people have been trying to exterminate coyotes for centuries. "Coyotes have been living in our community for a very long time, they've been in our neighbourhoods for a long time. We don't need to be afraid, we just need to know how to react when we see them and we need to discourage them from having any contact with us," said Benneian. "We've been sharing our town for a long time and we need to make sure we stay good neighbours." It was also pointed out that coyote populations are expected to take a hit in the near future due to an outbreak of mange, which has already been seen afflicting some of the animals. Benneian and Doyle's presentations were well received by those present. "I thought it was really informative," said Marie Green, area resident. Green said she feels better about going on nature walks now that she knows what to do if a coyote emerges from the brush. The Town of Oakville does have a reporting system in place for coyote encounters, someone feeding these wild life or a problem with food waste or garbage at www.oakville.ca/environment/ featured-wildlife.html. Residents can also call 905845-6601 and make their report to Town staff. Any community group or school who want to hear Benneian's free coyote presentation can make arrangements with her by calling 289-8131568. Now more space! I've been helping people with neuropathy and nerve problems for more than 25 years. More than 2 million Canadians suffer from peripheral neuropathy, a problem caused by damage to the nerves that supply your arms and legs. If ignored or mistreated, neuropathy can lead to irreversible health conditions. Why not get help by those trained to correct the major cause of peripheral neuropathy? The Single Most Important Solution To Your Neuropathy By using gentle techniques, I'm able to release the pressure that has built up on the nerve.
