Steven Hamel Celebration of Life is July 18 Being a teen can be difficult enough -- peer-pressure, an increasing class workload -- but paired with a learning disability, it can be a true struggle. That was the case for the late Steven Hamel, as his dad, Mike, describes it. "When he first entered high school, he had a hard time making friends, and was failing all of his courses," said Mike. "He was struggling with learning disabilities and ADHD (Attention DeficitHyperactivity Disorder), and the low self-esteem, lack of confidence and trouble focusing that come with them. Add to all that, the challenges of being a teenager... and our usually cheerful and smiling son was not happy." After placing Steven in sports to keep his unfocused and active behaviour in check, Mike and his wife, Jayne, came across Integra's Camp Towhee in Haliburton, Ont. -- a residential therapeutic program for youths with learning disabilities and related psychosocial difficulties. "He was just one of the crowd," he said. "At Towhee, campers could just be themselves while developing their skills. Steven earned his high school diploma, while working part-time, but died at age 24 in a tragic 2008 boating accident on Lake Muskoka -- his funeral attended by 2,000 people. "Ten years earlier, Steven could not have counted on that kind of support," Mike said. "My wife and I had to squeeze through the crowds at the door and were taken aback by the outpouring of love -- true testament that the work Integra does, works." Since 2008, the Hamels have held a fundraiser for Camp Towhee to keep the memory of their son and brother alive.
