BCSS expands support to gynecologic cancer patients Halton-based Breast Cancer Support Services (BCSS) will now include gynecologic cancers in its supportive care services. The change in BCSS' mission and vision statement was made at the organization's recent annual general meeting after a period of community consultation. "This is an important step in our history," said Lisa Van Arnhem, BCSS president. "During the past 24 years our core programs have been dedicated to topics and issues related to breast cancer. "This change to our mission and vision statement will make it possible to better address the needs of women with cervical, ovarian and other gynecologic cancers," she added. Although BCSS, which operates out of Burlington, has always supported anyone who needed help, there were no formal programs, other than those related to breast cancer support, said Blair Lancaster, BCSS executive director. "We are currently seeking funding to help get us started and we hope to have programs in place by the new year," said Lancaster. "We are also looking for volunteers to assist us in providing women with much-needed support." Expanding BCSS services was a perfect initiative, said Lancaster. "Pretty much all the breast cancer support groups across Canada are doing the same thing," she added. With assistance from the Burlington Community Foundation, BCSS organized community input sessions in the spring and began a planning process to assess the need and the opportunities for the new project.
