www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, July 20, 2012 · 32 Oakville Aquatic Club claims men's, women's and overall titles at provincials Evan White and Nina Tomic each won six medals as the Oakville Aquatic Club (OAK) recently swept both the men's and women's title to claim its fifth consecutive provincial long-course swim title. White won five gold medals and added a silver as OAK finished with 1542.5 points in the men's division, beating the Etobicoke Swim Club by 71 points. Tomic paced a decisive victory by OAK in the women's division. She won three gold medals and three bronze medals to add to OAK's tally of 1897.5 points. Etobicoke was the nearest rival, almost 400 points behind. Overall, OAK finished with 3,440 points, the only club to top the 3,000-point mark. Maggie Copeland won three gold medals and Bryce Kwiecien-Delaney and Luka Tomic each won a pair. Kwiecien-Delaney also added a silver and a bronze while Tomic also had a silver. Annie Harrison, Sarah Cauvel and Matthew Mac each brought home five medals from the provincial meet. Harrison and Cauvel each had one gold, two silver and two bronze medals while Mac had three silvers and a pair of bronze medals. Other gold medalists were: Ali Baki (one gold, one silver, one bronze); Annika Grewal (one gold, one silver); Collyn Gagne (one gold, two bronze); Marni Oldershaw (one gold, one bronze). Also winning medals were: Gamal Assaad, Aktssa Forbes (one silver, one bronze); Kristen Olvet, Emily Ramier, Oliva Strevett, Connor Wilkins (one silver); David Whiteside (two bronze); Olivia Sinclair, Hannah Burgess, Sharalynn Missiuna, Anaka WillDryden (one bronze). OAK also had nine gold medal-winning relays, including the women's 15-17 200m freestyle team made up by Missiuna, Harrison, Mika Spencer and Rebecca Gibson, which established a new club record. Grewal, Ramier, Abbey Saunders and Anaka Will-Dryden teamed up to win both the women's 13-14 200m and 400m medley relays. Grewal and Will-Dryden were also on the winning 200m and 400m freestyle relay teams, along with Alexandra Fabugais-Inaba. Bryanna Samuels rounded out the 200m team while Julia Matuszczak completed the 400m relay. Harrison, Oldershaw, Missiuna and Bridget Jordan won gold with the women's 15-17 400m medley relay. Luka Tomic, Marcelo Gamio and Ali Baki were on both the men's 200m and 400m freestyle gold-medal relays. Tyler Altenhof was the other member of the 400m team while Adrian Haasler rounded out the 200m relay. Tomic, Altenhof, Gamio and Baki made up the mixed 13-and-under 400m medley relay. Other medal-winning relays were: Bryce Kwiecien-Delaney, Matthew Mac, Thomas Ritchie and Mackenzie Hamill (men's 14-15 200m relay, silver; 400m free relay, silver); Mac, Michael Kalman, Hamill, Kwiecien-Delaney (men's 14-15 400m medley relay, silver); Evan White, David Whiteside, Gamal Assaad, Kwiecien-Delaney (men's 16-17 200m free relay, silver; 400m freestyle relay, bronze); Nina Tomic, Sarah Cauvel, Christina Ji, Maggie Copland (women's 11-12 400m freestyle relay, silver; 200m medley relay, bronze); Cauvel, Copland, Hailey Norris, Nina Tomic (women's 12-andunder 400m medley relay, bronze). Central Region team meet Matthew Brennan of the Oakville Aquatic Club (OAK) won six medals, including three gold, at the Central Region team championships. OAK won the large team championship with 4,676 points, beating Markham, which had a total of 4,494 points. Brennan finished in the top three in all six of his races, also collecting a pair of silver medals and a bronze in the 14-and-over boys division. Emily Cudny, Markus Kanigan, Anton Kaploun and Christine Morris each had five top-three finishes while Justin Kirkham had four. Mohamed Elmarsafawi won three medals while Olivia Haynes, Karen Liu, Emma Miron, Mikey Parker, Louis Sharland, Oscar Sharland, Daniel Xia and Edward Zhang each earned two. Also turning in top-three finishes were Christine Bradshaw, Bradley Brown, Alexander Glista, Danielle Haslip, Maryalice Keirstead, Emily Stronach, Victoria Taylor, Andrew Vu, Mathieu-T Vu-Noreau, OAK also had four gold-medal winning relay teams: mixed 10-11 200-metre medley relay (Bradley Brown, Emily Cudny, Mikey Parker and Mohamed Elmarsafawi); mixed nine-and under 200m medley relay (Karen Liu, Morgane Shuster, Anton Kaploun and Sarah Tsang); mixed 14-and-over 200m freestyle relay (Matthew Brennan, Daniel Xia, Amr Elfarseisy and Ariana Katsigiannis); mixed 12-13 200m freestyle relay (Justin Kirkham, Louis Sharland, Christine Morris and Markus Kanigan). HAPPY IN HAMILTON: The Oakville A's mosquito AAA team won the Hamilton Mountain Classic Baseball Tournament recently, downing the Hamilton Cardinals 17-9 in the championship game. Mosquito A's golden in Hamilton The Oakville A's mosquito AAA team defeated the Hamilton Cardinals 17-9 to win the Hamilton Mountain Classic Baseball Tournament earlier this month. The A's opened the tournament with a 15-1 victory over the Cardinals. After suffering their only loss of the tournament, 8-2 against Guelph, the A's bounced back to win their next three games. After beating Brampton 23-4, the A's downed Kitchener 15-1 and then defeated North York 14-4 in the semifinals. The A's Jacob Pokocky was named the tournament MVP. With the tournament victory, the A's improved their overall record to 27-11-2. Other members of the A's team are Christian Bachoumis, Dasan Brown, Griffin Conroy, David Dillman, Cooper Elliott, Daniel Freeman, Thomas Harbour, Ethan Paulos, Robbie Strachan and Matt Tani. The coaching staff is made up of head coach Paul Harbour and assistants George Bachoumis, Chris Conroy, Kevin Freeman, Al Strachan and Ryan Vopni. Cardinal win TOURNAMENT WIN: The Oakville A's minor rookie team defeated the Sarnia Braves 15-14 to win the seventh annual Cardinal Classic Tournament recently in St. Thomas. Members of the team are Jacob Wise, Mason Bondac, A.J. Guerrero, Easton Kirkpatrick, Brayden Gillespie, Connor Vainio, Troy Elson, Jake Fisher, Chris Frauley, Cole Leonard, Santiago Rincon and Jack Grant. The team is coached by Scott Kirkpatrick, Dave Grant, Dave Gillespie and Bruce Frauley.
