Chamber president receives Diamond Jubilee Medal By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Oakville Chamber of Commerce President John Sawyer was recognized for his service to the community recently with a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. Halton MPP Ted Chudleigh presented the medal to a surprised Sawyer during a roundtable meeting between the Chamber and Progressive Conservative MPPs Chudleigh, Jane McKenna and Jeff Yurek at the Kerr Street office. "John has done a marvellous job managing the direction of the Oakville Chamber over many years," said Chudleigh. "The success of the Chamber is due to his guidance and the high quality of board chairs recruited over the years." Commemorating the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth's ascension to the throne, the Diamond Jubilee Medal is a tangible way to honour Her Majesty's service to Canada and at the same time honour Canadians who have made significant contributions to their communities. "It was really humbling," said Sawyer. "We spend our lives recognizing other people so it is kind of a shock to get that kind of recognition back. There are so many other deserving people in this community. It is just such an honour to be recognized." Oakville Chamber of Commerce Chair Wendy Rinella called Sawyer a champion of corporate social responsibility who works tirelessly to bring together business, community and political leaders to build a vibrant and sustainable community. "He is truly passionate about supporting local businesses, not-for-profits and charities," she said. The presentation marks the second Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal awarded to an Oakville Chamber of Commerce leader. Julia Hanna, vice-chair of the chamber, was awarded a Diamond Jubilee Medal earlier this year. Hanna is also the owner of Ristorante Julia and Ritorno, as well as founder of the Kids Culinary Community. "Through our tax dollars, local businesses help subsidize the quality of life in our community," said Rinella. "The Chamber is committed to supporting local community initiatives that enhance opportunities for businesses and at the same time support the community overall. We provide volunteer assistance, planning guidance and we facilitate connections with business and community leaders." The opportunities come courtesy of the Region's Small Business Centre, where the Summer Company Program has returned -- providing participants a chance to earn grants of up to $3,000. Half of that's for start-up costs, while the remainder is received upon successful completion of the program, sponsored by the Ministry of Economic Development and Innovation. Selected from numerous applicants across Halton, this year's eight participants are currently developing ideas related to everything from graphic design and exterior painting to swimming lessons and flyer delivery services. In addition to the cash awards, students receive business training and mentoring from volunteers from the local business community. The goal of the program is to support students interested in pursuing entrepreneurship as a career goal.
