Pet owners warned about leaving dogs in cars By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF The Oakville & Milton Humane Society is again reminding residents that leaving a pet inside a car on a hot day, even with a window cracked open, can have serious consequences. One couple in Oakville found this out first-hand Thursday morning after concerned bystanders contacted the humane society after spotting three dogs left inside a vehicle in the parking lot of 467 Speers Rd. One bystander said the dogs, a beagle, Shih Tzu, and Labrador Retriever, had been inside the car for at least an hour. Another bystander was so worried she slipped a bowl of cold water inside the vehicle to cool the dogs down. Even though one of the vehicle's windows was rolled down slightly and the morning was not exactly yet a scorcher at 23 degrees Celsius and 61 per cent humidity, humane society officials still took the situation very seriously, dispatching two OSPCA (Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) officers to the scene. "The temperature in a car rises rapidly. Leaving any animal in a car especially with the temperatures we had today could end in fatal results," said Kim Millan, interim executive director of the Oakville & Milton Humane Society. "Rolling a window down is not enough and parking in the shade is not enough." Millan said one OSPCA officer was preparing to enter the vehicle when the owners returned. Millan said an investigation into the incident is currently underway to determine whether charges under 9 · Friday, August 17, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com PHOTOS BY MARTA IWANEK / OAKVILLE BEAVER / @halton_photog AN UNHEALTHY MIX: The Oakville & Milton Humane Society stopped by after receiving reports of a trio of dogs left for more than an hour in a vehicle in a Speers Road parking lot Thursday morning. ownership ban. Upon examination, Millan said, the dogs in the Oakville parking lot seemed to be OK; however, the OSPCA officer recommended the owners take them to a vet to be certain. With that the owners the OSPCA Act will be laid. Conviction of the charge of causing and permitting distress to an animal can have very serious penalties including two years in prison, fines of up to $60,000 and a potential lifetime pet were permitted to leave the area with their dogs. While this story appeared to have a happy ending for the dogs, Millan said this is not always the case as every summer in Ontario numerous dogs die after being left in a hot car by their owner. "It just happens far to often," she said. "Dogs have a limited ability to sweat so even a short time in an environment like today could cause their body temperatures to raise considerably. It doesn't take long. If you have ever turned off your car and just waited for someone to get something from the store you know yourself how hot it can get in there." 11:59 FREE!
