NIKKI WESLEY / OAKVILLE BEAVER / @halton_photog Oakville's State-of-the-Art Hearing Clinic OPEN HOUSE October 4th (10am - 4pm) Student architectural design competition now underway Building on the success of the inaugural event, John Willmott Architect, Inc. (JWA) has announced it is sponsoring the Oakvillebased student design competition for 2012. The competition is opened to all Grade 11 and 12 students attending Oakville schools, who have an interest in architecture and or other design-related fields. For this year's event, students will be asked to design a public skating rink and pavilion for the Sixteen Mile Creek Harbour area. Entries will be judged mainly on design concept and overall presentation, but also on technical detail and drawing quality. The 2012 competition will expand the digital computing component of the submission. Awards for the top three entrants as judged by a jury panel include an Apple iPad. Entrants all receive a competition package of equipment and all those submitting a design will receive a participation prize. "Last year, all of our staff and judges were amazed by the talented submissions -- many comparable to a first-year university level architectural project" said John Willmott, principal of JWA. "And, we learned in the spring that one of the prize winners was accepted to the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. In her message to us, she credited the opportunity to participate in the design competition as one of the assets in her application." All entrants will have the opportunity to meet with an architectural advisor at an interim consultation to assess progress, answer questions, and provide feedback. Deadline for submissions is Nov. 20 with an awards event scheduled for Nov. 22. Registration is now open and will close on Oct. 2. An information meeting will be held Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. in the offices of John Willmott Architect Inc., 594 Chartwell Rd. Pre-registration is required to attend the information meeting. A $20 entry fee will be collected. For more information on how to register, visit www.jwarchitect.com and look for the Student Design Competition link.
