www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, September 19, 2012 · 24 Videos aim to help parents with teens New videos released recently by Our Kids Network (OKN) will give parents insight and ideas to help at a time when their teenage children seem to be changing so much and less in control. The videos, New Kind of Parenting, can be accessed online, and takes parents through the stages of development from 10-16 years of age when teens experience dramatic emotional and physical changes. Featured in the videos, renowned child psychiatrist, Dr. Jean Clinton takes parents through the different stages of development using easy-to-understand language. Clinton discusses the connection between behaviour and how the brain works. Parents will learn ways to nurture and maintain positive, supportive relationships with their children as they become teenagers. "It's important to remember that children are growing and developing during this period. Teens' brains are still `under construction,'" said Clinton in a release. "Building and maintaining strong and positive relationships helps that construction. Parents need to look at their children as being at promise, rather than at risk. It's a new kind of parenting." When trying to cope with their children's behaviour, parents can also feel embarrassed, overwhelmed and may not know where to go for help. The videos aim to help relieve the stigma parents can experience in asking for help when problems arise with their teen. More information about services can also be accessed on the OKN website. "The New Kind of Parenting videos are based on research and common concerns that both parents and teens have identified," said Elena DiBattista, director of Our Kids Network. "We wanted to give families practical advice and information that will help them not just make it through the teen years, but thrive together." A New Kind of Parenting videos, developed for service providers working with families and youths, are also available online. Our Kids Network is a Haltonwide partnership of organizations and agencies serving children and youths. Guided by research, the network provides the platform for participating agencies to plan and integrate services and supports so children have every opportunity to thrive. MICRODERMABRASION and Bio Marine Extract Mask Beauty & Spa Love your locks Shiny, lustrous and thick hair is desired by so many women. Far too often, however, this isn't the type of hair DNA has dealt. But you can use the wide array of products and hair care tips available to achieve the best head of hair you can put forward. 1. Change your diet: A protein-rich diet will help grow stronger hair. Look for high protein foods such as liver, other organ meats, legumes, and also foods rich in B vitamins. Also, iron, calcium and silica help to prevent hair loss. Silica is found in the outer coverings of potatoes, green and red peppers, and cucumbers. 2. Water temperature: Depending on your hair type you will wash your hair daily, every other day, or even less frequently. Oily hair may need to be washed more frequently. Generally, every other day is the average. When washing, it's recommended that you use warm water. Water that is too hot can damage the hair. 3. Washing technique: Use the pads of your fingers and not your nails to scrub your scalp. Be sure to rinse all of the shampoo out of your hair, otherwise residue can make locks limp and dull. Choose simple shampoos that do little more than clean the oil from your hair. Also, use conditioner sparingly. Globbing it on actually can have the reverse effect on your hair. Avoid rubbing conditioner into the scalp. 4. Processing: Treatments that chemically alter your hair, such as colouring, perming and straightening, should be used sparingly, and rarely at the same time. Otherwise you can damage the hair. 6. Comb and brush with caution: It's not necessary to comb or brush your hair to the point of tears. In fact, excessively tugging on the hair can cause it to weaken and break. Only brush dry hair. Use a wide-toothed comb on wet hair to detangle. And always handle the hair gently. 5. Get regular haircuts: Split ends can quickly ruin your hairstyle. Even if you are growing out your hair, it is important to go for regular trimming to maintain your shape. Haircuts enable you to style your hair more easily and therefore use less product and fewer appliances to create the look you desire. $ *With coupon only.
