You will have six people living in a room smaller than this," said Debbie, gesturing to The Oakville Beaver's 10-foot-by-10-foot interview room. "It's a permanent shanty town. They have washrooms that were overflowing. I'd say there are several thousand people living there." Paul said the group used $100 to purchase supplies and hire cooks to give 500-600 children a breakfast of porridge. "The kids all line up in a very neat and wellmannered line for their little mug of gruel. We'll get boxes of biscuits and we'll give them a cookie," said Debbie. "It's an unbelievable experience." Paul said the ability to help others is worth the $4,500 investment, particularly when the group delivers family kits to those in need. He said last year, the group used $3,000 to assemble kits for 60 families, which were selected by the community leaders. Debbie said the recipients of the kits were mostly single mothers and grandmothers who were caring for their children and grandchildren. Each kit contains items that help the family with day-to-day life, like a pot, jerrycan, bar of soap, blanket and mosquito nets. Clothing and school supplies were also distributed to these homes. "The reaction we get is over the top," said Paul. "Some of the women will start crying, they'll hug you. Ugandans are beautiful people. Very warm, very welcoming," said Debbie. "They are just so grateful for anything you do for them." Paul and Debbie said the volunteers they are looking for need no specific qualifications, stating last year's group included teens to baby boomers. One thing the volunteers will need, they said, is a desire to work as part of a team. "It takes a certain kind of person to want to do something like this," said Debbie. "It's not Oakville. It's not a holiday." Paul said the experience is for people who are prepared to step outside their comfort zone. "Some people like that, some people have no interest in experiencing that," he said. When asked why they continue to lead relief missions to Uganda, Debbie and Paul said it is just the right thing to do. "We are very fortunate," said Debbie.
