MacIntosh helps Lakers win Mann Cup By Herb Garbutt OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Coming just four days before his 23rd birthday, winning the Mann Cup could be viewed as an early present for Jordan MacIntosh. The real gift, though, came a couple of months earlier. MacIntosh was helping out at a lacrosse tournament when he learned he had been traded from the last-place Ajax Rock to the Peterborough Lakers, a team that featured some of the sport's biggest names, including John Grant, MacIntosh's favourite player as he was growing up in Oakville. Among the reasons MacIntosh was brought in by the Lakers was to help the team on faceoffs. As if joining a veteran roster wasn't enough pressure, he said the nature of the role drew even more attention to him. "Faceoffs are very cut and dry. You either win or you lose," he said. "Every game you just try to go out and give it your best and try to make adjustments as you go." MacIntosh also contributed offensively. Regular season and playoffs combined, he had eight goals and 21 points in 18 games. Despite its star-studded lineup, the Lakers were off to a slow start, going just 4-4 in the first eight games of the Major Series Lacrosse season. MacIntosh, the MSL's rookie of the year in 2011, joined the team just as things started to come together for the Lakers, who won five of their final six regular season games. Peterborough then rolled through the league playoffs, winning 11 of 12. "It was amazing. I learned so much in such a short time there," MacIntosh said. "It was pretty cool to see how guys prepared for a game. John Tavares is 44 and he's the last on the floor every warmup, working on his shot, getting his stick ready. I hope I'm half as good as he is at that age." The Lakers still had the big prize in their sights. Matched up against the Langley Thunder for the Canadian senior championship, Peterborough dropped the first two games by a goal, the second one in overtime. "We were definitely worried. We had only lost one game in the playoffs so that was an area we hadn't been in yet," MacIntosh said. "But playing in Peterborough, with a full barn of 4,000 people, we knew nobody was going to win four in there." MacIntosh helped turn the tide as he had a hat trick and earned player of the game honours in a 14-10 win 27 · Wednesday, September 26, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com HOME IMPROVEMENTS 905-845-3824 ext. 284 jlangero@oakvillebeaver.com ALUMINUM E.K. Langley took the first two games of the best-of-seven series but Peterborough battled back to win the next four. in Game 3. Peterborough evened the series two nights later with a 9-8 win. The Lakers continued to build on that momentum, taking the series lead with a 9-5 win before clinching the national title with a 14-8 victory. "Winning is the best feeling. It's why we play," said MacIntosh, who also won a national title in Jr. B with the Oakville Buzz. "Hopefully I can add a couple more rings in the next few years." MacIntosh will have many more chances. In addition to playing for the Lakers, he also plays for the Minnesota Swarm of the National Lacrosse League and for the Rochester Rattlers of the outdoor Major Lacrosse League.
