A charity barbecue held Sunday to help the family of three-year-old Savannah Herbert, is being described as a huge success. While the amount raised is not being disclosed, Dawn Sutherland, one of the barbecue's organizers, said the Hopedale Park event attracted a large number of people who came out to donate. The barbecue was organized by neighbours and friends to support the Herbert family whose daughter Savannah is currently fighting for her life at McMaster Children's Hospital. Savannah has been in hospital since Aug. 22, when she was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, an aggressive and malignant tumor that develops from nerve tissue. Savannah's mother, Brandy, has stayed by her daughter's bedside since she was admitted to McMaster, but that has caused financial issues for her family as she is its only source of income. The charity barbecue's proceeds will now allow Brandy to concentrate on her daughter and not on whether she is going to lose her home. "The family will be financially stable for a while," wrote Sutherland in an e-mail. "They truly do appreciate everything that Fundraiser for Savannah deemed a huge success "The family will be financially stable for a while." Dawn Sutherland, fundraiser co-organizer has been done for them so far... The family is also very thankful that some attention is now being paid to the trauma of neuroblastoma and other childhood cancers and how little research is actually being done on them." Sutherland said she is thankful for those who volunteered at the event and the staff of Catering by Heat who donated their time to help make the barbecue a success. The organizers behind the fundraiser said they are currently putting plans together for a possible blood drive. Brandy has encouraged residents to give blood, stating that Savannah has had more than 30 transfusions since her arrival at McMaster. While Savannah has a hard fight ahead of her, Sutherland said her white blood count is improving daily.
